The following article was recently forwarded by Cathy Kubly for posting here. ************************************************************************* From: CKubly9527@aol.com Subject: Jonas FAY Bio Date: Thu, 4 May 2000 03:44:28 EDT 20th Century Biographical Dictionary of Notable Americans: Vol IV Jonas FAY, patriot, was born at Hardwick, MA, 28 January 1737; son of Stephen and Ruth (CHILD) FAY; grandson of John and Elizabeth (WELLINGTON) FAY, and great-grandson of John and Mary (BRIGHAM) FAY, who came from Wales to Boston, arriving on the Speedwell, 27 June 1656. The FAYs were of French origin, having fled to Wales during the Huguenot persecution. Jonas served in 1756 in the French war as clerk in Capt. Samuel Robinson's company of Massachusetts troops at Fort Edward and Lake George. He afterward studied medicine and in 1766 was among the early settlers of Bennington, VT, where he practiced his profession. In 1772 he was appointed a delegate from Bannington and neighboring towns to appear before Gov. William Tryon of New York and urge him to discontinue his violent proceedings against the Vermont settlers. In March 1774, he was clerk of the convention of settlers which drew up resolutions to defend their cause and their leaders by force, Allen, Warner and others having been threatened by the New York assembly with outlawry and death. In 1775 he accompanied Ethan Allen's expedition to Ticonderoga as surgeon. In January, 1776, he was clerk to the convention at Dorset and drew up the petition to congress to be allowed to serve the patriot cause independent of New York. He was secretary of the convention of July, 1777, that framed the constitution of Vermont and during the summer of that year was a member of the council of safety. Between 1777 and 1782 he was four times an agent of the state to the continental congress. He was a member of the governor's council, 1778-85; judge of the supreme court in 1782, and judge of probate, 1782-87. He then returned to the practice of medicine at Bennington, removing to Charlotte in 1800, to Pawlet a few years later and finally returning to Bennington. He was twice married: first, 1 May 1760, to Sarah [FASSETT], daughter of Capt. John FASSETT, and secondly, 20 November 1777, to Mrs. Lydia SAFFORD. He was joint author with Ethan Allen of A Concise Refutation of the Claims of New Hampshire, Massachusetts and New York to the Territory of Vermont (1780). He died at Bennington, Vt, 6 March 1818. ________________________________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free E-mail from MSN Hotmail at http://www.hotmail.com

Dear Folks, I think that Elijah Fay 5 [OPF # 69], his wife Martha W.[alker] KNIGHT Fay, and his son Elbridge Elijah Fay 6 [OPF # 888], and his wife Mary Eleanor GOBLE Fay and their oldest child Clara Eleanor FAY [OPF # 888-1] are listed in the Kane County IL Census of 1860. Two "Laborer on Farm" are also listed in this Census: George Perkins, age 20, b. IL and Frederick Goble, age 14, b. Indiana. It is likely that Frederick was related to Elbridge Elijah Fay's wife, Mary Eleanor GOBLE Fay, age 26, b. Indiana, (ca 1833/34). This information comes from Dolores Haller's transcription of the 1860 Kane County Illinois Census. transcribed in May 1984). Sincerely, Mary (FAY) Nelson 9

Hi everyone, One of the recent postings cited a large number of land records. I don't know exactly where those citations came from, but do know that the Bureau of Land Management has an extremely useful site at: http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/ This is an index of all eastern land grants by the government. You can search it by surname and several other ways. Amazingly, you can actually bring up an image of the original signed land grant and print it out if you like. Use the "small gif" button. The actual image of the document in many cases has much more complete information, including co-owners if any, and full correct legal description. Most go by the federal township numbering system so they should list state, township number like "township three north", range number like "range four east of the fourth principle meridian", the section numer (1-36) the legal description of the fraction of the section, like "north 1/2 southwest quarter" Theres 640 acres in a section so you can figure it from that if it doesn't state the acreage explicitly. There are many Fay land grants listed at this site. For an interesting example try running a search for Harrison Fay or his wife Isabella in All of the states. Morning all, I was doing more research into the FAY's line here in Cleveland, Ohio tonight. As there were quite a few FAY's in the census index, I restricted my search to just the known names, I wanted further info on, and those in Cuyahoga County. All this info is from the 1850 census: Parma Township 1543 1673 Benajah FAY 70 M 6000 Mass. Rhoda 72 F Canada Jeremiah 28 M New York Eliza 17 F Ohio Lavina 11 F Mass NOTE: Benajah FAY is OPF 95, though Jeremiah, by all other records was born in Parma, Ohio. This does easily show that Benajah FAY had children by his second wife, Rhoda EDWARDS. By my math Eliza was born 1 year after they were married. I am not sure as to the age of Lavina. is correct. What year did Lovinah, sister of Benejah FAY come to Ohio? I've not yet uncovered that information in my research. Perhaps the entire family went ot Mass. to get Lovinah and bring her here, in which case the state of birth for the youngest child would be okay. Brooklyn Township 1094 1210 Eli FAY 22 M Blacksmith 400 Ohio Lois 42 F 400 Mass Amos 20 M Farmer 400 Ohio Henry 18 M Farmer 400 Ohio Lovell B 2 M Ohio Lovina 76?F Ohio NOTE: Benejah F FAY (OPF 95) had a son named Benajah FAY Jr, whom married Lois HODGMAN. Benejah FAY Jr. died in 1849, one year before this census was taken. This family above is his. It's possible that the Lovina in this family in Benejah FAY Sr. sister. I cannot say for sure for two reasons. Lovina was not born in Ohio, and the age was somewhat illegible. It's either 16 or 76. If the age is 76, I'd bank on her being the sister of Benejah FAY Sr. So I'm not sure as to how she exactly fits into the family. I noticed she is listed as the last member of the household, for whatever reason. Brooklyn Township 1056 1168 Asa FAY 49 M Farmer Mass Florilla 35 F Conn Louis 18 M Laborer Ohio Roxanna 17 F Ohio James 15 M Ohio Franklin 13 M Ohio Martin 11 M Ohio Harriet 8 F Michigan Asa 6 M Ohio Sophronia 3 F Ohio Charles 11/12 M Ohio NOTE: Asa FAY is a son of Benejah FAY Sr (OPF 95). He was married to Florilla BRAINARD., and reportedly (from Ginger) traveled out west and returned to Ohio for unknown reasons. I've not seen any proof of this of yet. I am aware of some FAY's from the line who did travel to Wisconsin, as well as Michigan. Enjoy, Jim SHREVE Sr.
Hello all, Just to let ya know I have to unsub for a time. Going to visit my parents and I don't know how long I'll be. Keep searching. Patti
