While living there she became engaged to a Missourian in the service who was later reported "missing and unaccounted for in battle". Sorrowing and homesick, after a year's absence from Illinois, she returned to Scott County in a covered wagon. There is a headstone in the Fairview Cemetary in Grangeville, Idaho for Catherine and Gilbert. Catherine is not buried there. There are several affadavits from her children in Gilbert's Civil War Pension File stating that Catherine died near Buffalo, Kansas. Then Gilbert remarried in 1889 and then moved to Idaho. The author of this is still researching to find her burial plot. If any of these family names click with you, please email me. Thanks to you all!
