McDowell News Marion, NC June 16, 2003 George Farris George Newton Farris, 86, of 54 Carswell Drive, Nebo, died Sunday, June 15, 2003 at his residence. A native of York County, S.C., he was a retired farmer and veteran of World War II serving in the U.S. Army. Surviving are his wife of 58 years, Betty Hardin Farris; five daughters, Bonnie Hartness of Gastonia, Elaine Farris of Norfolk, Va., Audrey Rhinehart of Stanley, Robyn Prickelmyer of Marietta, S.C. and Connie Deese of Nebo; a brother, Hunter Farris of Gastonia; two sisters, Alice Lewis of Gastonia and Sue Stewalt of Clover, S.C.; five grandchildren, Chris Farris, Tami Brown, Page Brandon, Emily Queen and Nikki Deese; and 15 great-grandchildren. A service of remembrance will be held at 5 p.m. today at his residence. The family will receive friends from 4 to 5 p.m. today also at the home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hospice of McDowell County, 218 Logan St., Marion, N.C. 28752. Asheville Mortuary Service is assisting the Farris family with arrangements.

George was the son of Hugh Caldwell Farris and Margaret Owensby Farris, Hugh was the son of George Templeton Farris of York County, S.C. Hugh's wife, Betty, also is a Farris descendant. Her mother was Evelyn Farris, daughter of Moses Miles Farris, son of George Templeton Farris. The obit misnames George's sister -- Sue Stewart of Clover.
