Farris and his wife, Nancy Catherine Moore, has recently come to light. They are found in the 1870 and 1880 Censuses of Cedar County, Missouri. However Nancy Catherine was the daughter of Squire Moore and his second wife, Celia Catherine Anderson, and is found in their household, unmarried, in the 1860 Census of Linn County, Missouri. James was born in Missouri, but I don't know where, or who his parents were. I would like to find out. His death date, 1888, is given in his wife's obituary; no date, no place, but probably in Cedar County. Nancy Catherine and several of her children are known to have been in Franklin County, Kansas in the 1890s. By 1900, Nancy was in Baxter County, Arkansas, where she died 10 March 1929. James and Nancy had the following children: Riley T. Farris, b 12 Feb 1863, MO Anna Laura Farris, b 5 Feb 1866, Stockton, Cedar, MO Edward Allen Farris, b 1868, MO Horace O. Farris, b 1870, MO Ida Viola Farris, b ca 1873, MO Lillian A. (Lillie) Farris, b 7 Aug 1876, Stockton Thaddeus Claude Farris, b May 1881, MO Riley is not mentioned in his mother's 1929 obituary, but is listed in Anna Laura's obituary in 1933. He lived at Sacramento, California. Anna Laura, my great-grandmother, married 3 times. First, to William R. Cordell. IGI says this was 5 Sept 1880 in Cedar County, but Cedar County does not have the record on its microfilm. One known child, Laura Cordell, b July 1881, MO (1900 Census). Anna Laura supposedly married second a mysterious Mr. Clark, by whom she had at least two children (neither documented; family members mentioned them), Bob and Helen. Helen was living at Topeka, Shawnee, Kansas sometime before 1963. In 1898, at Ottawa, Franklin, Kansas, Anna Laura married my great-grandfather, August Gebhard. They had four children, 3 of them born after 1900. The 1900 Census says she bore 11 children, 7 of whom were living. Who were they? Where were they? Edward died at Ava, Douglas, Missouri in 1940. He married Hattie or Hallie Hurst and they had two children, Mabel (married a Wilson) and Howard C. Horace may be the Horace Orland Farris who died 1946 in California (SSDI). In 1891, in Cedar County, he married Cordelia Morrison. The marriage record states he was from Ottawa, Kansas. Ida married Joseph Henry Adams, son of Eli D. and Mary A. (Black) Adams on 18 March 1893, Ottawa, Kansas. They had one child, Blanche Marie Adams, b 1895 at Ottawa. Ida divorced Joseph in 1897 at Ottawa. Subsequently she married a Mr. Miller, from whom she may also have been granted a divorce prior to 1920. She lived into the 1940s at Cotter, Baxter, Arkansas. It is not known whether she had other children. Lillie married John David Adams on 18 March 1893 at Ottawa. John was the brother of Joseph Adams. Lillie had two children that died young, including a daughter born in 1895 at Ottawa. Her third child, Harry C. Adams, was born in Feb 1897; he died in 1980, probably at Coffeyville, Montgomery, Kansas where he had lived for some years with his wife, Margaret Elizabeth Kelley. Lillie died 5 Aug 1900 at Ottawa, of heart trouble, and was buried there. Her obit states that she left two children, one an infant. I cannot find this fourth child in Census records, so it may also have died young. Thaddeus married Stella Rose and they had several children, including Ernest, Frank, Irene (married a Messick), and Helen Rose Farris. Thaddeus and his family lived in Baxter County Arkansas, where he died in 1932. Irene may have lived at Green Forest, Arkansas at one time. Stella eventually moved to California. Anna Laura (Farris) Cordell Clark Gebhard died 29 Sept 1933 at Ottawa, Kansas and is buried there. The 1900 Census says Nancy Catherine (Moore) Farris born 10 children, and the 1910 Census says 11. Stockton Cemetery at Stockton, Missouri lists a James T. Farris, no dates, and a Homer E. Farris, 1878-1879 who may be one of the missing children. Who were the others? Where are they buried? Is anyone "missing" a James Farris born about 1832 in Missouri? This is his age calculated from census data, so it may be off by several years. He served in the Civil War, on the Union side. Please let me know if any of this sounds familiar to you. I have found a descendant of Blanche Adams, but there must be more cousins out there somewhere! Alma Robertson
