Does anyone on this list have any information the Faris/Farris family or families that went from South Carolina to Maury County, Tennessee? My gg grandmother was Mary Alexander Faris, b. Nov. 28, 1804 and d. September 24, 1882. I had always thought she was born in Tennessee until recently. While looking at a census for, I believe 1880, I found that she listed her place of birth as South Carolina. I know she married my gg grandfather, William Carson Hearst, in Maury County, Tennessee on July 7, 1829. They were married by Duncan Brown who was the minister at McCain's Cumberland Presbyterian Church, Maury County, Tennessee prior to 1848. The actual date is unknown. Mary and William had seven children. Five of the children died very young. I will list the names of the children hoping that some of the name may give some of you a possible clue. The names are: Rody English Hearst ( I think this may possibly be Rhoda), Robert Alexander Hearst, George Thomas Hearst, John F. Williams Hearst, James Foster Hearst, Benjamin Faris Hearst and William Carson Hearst, Jr. Benjamin and William were the only children to reach adulthood. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks, Nora
Hi Nora, There is a Susan Hurt who is knowledgeable about Faris-Feris- Farris families in Maury Co., TN. She was at one time a subscriber to this list. Maybe still is. She might miss this post if she's like most of us who pay attention only if we recognize a name coupled with place and dates. Try another post to the list with "Faris - Maury Co., TN - 1829" in the subject line. Checked my file on Feris in Maury Co., TN, and your Mary did not pop up. There were three brothers Alexander, Isaac, and Caleb Feris who were born in Chester Co., PA, and moved with their parents to York Co., South Carolina in the late 1760s. After 1800 all three moved their families to Maury Co., TN. There were a couple of Rodys or Rhodas in the families. Also, at least one son and one daughter of the next generation had Alexander for a middle name and one daughter married a man with the surname Alexander. These Ferises also had some contacts with Chester Co., SC, families who also moved to Maury Co., TN. Caleb Feris in particular appears in Chester Co., South Carolina, records. There was also a John Farris from (somewhere in) South Carolina who moved his family to Maury Co., TN. He may have been kin to Alexander, Isaac, & Caleb. I don't know. His children, like those of the three brothers, were contemporary with your Mary. Don't know where your Mary Alexander Faris 1804-1882 might fit in with a Faris family from South Carolina. There were some Marys in these families, but marriage records indicate they married someone other than a Hearst. Think that there also some Faris families from Virginia in Maury Co., TN. But as you say, your Mary shows in 1880 census as born in SC. Susan Hurt wrote that several Faris families moved from Maury Co., TN, to Calloway Co., KY, but they were not all related that made that move. Good luck with your search.
