It has been years since I did any work on the James Adair d. 1783 Indian Trader, but at the time I could find no connection to John Adair & Jean Faires or to their son, my GG Grandfather, James Adair b. 08 Jun 1790. If you are interested in reading more about James the Indian Trader, this is the web site of Lisa Bowes that I found years ago. When I went to it today it said it had been updated June 6, 2006 and tells of more recent info. found: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Valley/9708/james.html As Dan said, I also could find no connection between the Adair line from Laurens Co. SC and John Adair and Jean Faires, of York Co. SC however I have read of some more recent research work that the Laurens Co line has done that said the Adair brothers who first went to Laurens Co. SC came there from Md/DE so this leads me to think that there "could possibly be" an earlier family connection either in there or back in Ireland. Dorothy Hyden has been researching her Adair line much longer and has a much deeper understanding of the DE Adair's than I do so hopefully she might know more. I just don't have access to any DE material where I live in TX therefore just have not done much work on my earlier family up there. My James Adair line left York Co. SC after 1820 (after parents of James & Ann Smith had died) arriving in Locust Grove, Henry Co. GA by 21 May 1822 (date his lst son was born), and as soon as the Henry Co. GA Indian land was opened up to white settlers. The books you mentioned sound very interesting, too. Wish I could be of more help. Nell Lewis. In reading Tom Hatley's book, "The Dividing Paths", regarding relations and military campaigns between South Carolina colonists and the Cherokee tribe during the mid-1700's, there are frequent references to and quotes from an Indian trader named James Adair. Does anyone know if he is related to Jean Adair Faires (Faris, etc), wife of James Faires? The book also quotes from the diary Arthur Faires kept during one campaign against the Cherokees. Being descended from, both, South Carolinians and Carolina Cherokees, I'm finding this book a very fascinating and informative read and recommend it to anyone interested in the subject.
