Birdie [Mary Bird Hammer] Farris, 95, of Broken Bow, passed away Tuesday, Aug. 29, 2006, at Broken Bow Nursing Home. She was born May 7, 1911, in Nashoba [OK], the daughter of John and Elizabeth (Riley) Hammer. The family moved to Ludlow [LeFlore Co., OK.] where Birdie spent her young adult life. Later, she lived in south Texas in the Rio Grande Valley. She and Henry Farris were married in Edinburg, Texas, on Jan. 9, 1935. They moved back to Ludlow in the early forties. After Henry retired from road maintenance work, he and Birdie operated the Ludlow General Store for a few years. She and her husband were very active in the church, both helping build the church building in Ludlow. Later moving to Broken Bow, they were active members of the First Christian Church, until her health failed. Henry passed away in 1990. Birdie loved to read her Bible, loved music, and played the guitar in her youth, liked to crochet, work with flowers, and loved to cook. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Elizabeth Hammer; husband, Henry Farris; five brothers, Leonard, Eldon, Irl, L.J., and Sam; and one sister, Edith Fisher. Birdie leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Debs Hammer and wife Ann, and numerous nieces and nephews. Services will be 10 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 2, 2006, at Little River Christ Church, Ludlow, with Paster Leroy Williams and Mark Hammer officiating. Interment will follow at Ludlow Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 1, 2006, at Brumley Funeral Home, Broken Bow.
