She was born in Stanley on October 6, 1910, daughter of the late William C. and Mary Ellen Farris Murphy. She grew up and worked most of her life on North Main Street in Stanley where she watched the town of Stanley grow and develop. After graduating from high school at age 16, she began working for the Lola Mills, which later became Katterman and Mitchell. Through many changes of management, operations and ownership; through the great depression, World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, and through periods of prosperity, Venie could be found at her desk until 1975, when she retired from J.P. Stevens. She was preceded in death by her husband Glenn Bumgardner in 1968, and has been an active and faithful member of the First United Methodist Church in Stanley for over 80 years. Her enthusiastic love for life in Stanley led the town leaders to choose her as Grand Marshall in the 1992 Christmas parade. Since 1998, Venie has resided at the Stanley Total Living Center. Survivors include many nieces and nephews. Funeral services conducted by the Rev. Dr. Thomas Stegald will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the Woodlawn Chapel of Woodlawn Funeral Home in Mount Holly. Interment will follow in Hillcrest Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home one hour prior to the service.
