Hello Mike, I can't believe someone finally connects to this group of Farris's I am trying to research. I don't have a lot of documented information but I would like to explain some bits and pieces of what I have found so far. First in my family it has always been told that seven Farris brothers left Mississippi going to Texas. When they got to the Mississippi river one of the boys changed his mind and decided to go Missouri instead. The others tried to swim the river and one brother got separated and was never heard of again but was believed to have made it to New Orleans. A lot of this is probably a bunch of family gossip with no truth what so ever. However my great grandfather is listed in the 1900 census of Livingston Parish Louisiana as being born in Texas, and his father is supposed to be born in Kentucky. So I guess some of it is truth for I have found five Farris's from this group I am researching in Texas but I doubt they swam the river more likely they built a raft to ferry them across. Now this is where I begin my search. I searched the hunting for Bears books at the library and found about eight marriages in Lawrence County Mississippi for Farris's between 1800 and 1840. I am quoting this information from memory so please don't fault me if there is a question about something please ask and I will see if I can locate the documentation in my files for you. One of these marriages was for Fred Pollard and Nancy Farris around 1819 I think. One was a Samuel Farris to Orpha Smith in 1832 my Great - Great Grandfa ther. One was John Farris to Aurena Fulgam around 1820. One was Albert Farris to Annie Ott around 1830. One was Squire Farris to a Rutland girl in 1837. One was Lucinda Farris I believe she married Cullen Yaun. There was also a Lindsey, William, and Thomas married Elizabeth Rutland in 1811 or 1814, I am uncertain of which. I went to Lawrence County to get copies of these marriages but they wanted $10.00 a copy so I only copied the one for my Great - Great Grandfather Samuel Farris. While I was there I located a will in 1843 for Thomas Farris in which his widow and two minor children were mentioned but no names were given but, Samuel Farris was administrator so this was likely his father or possibly a brother. Through a friend Stan Farris I got a copy of a census of the Bevil District in Texas for the year 1835 in which John, Samuel, Squire, and William Farris are listed spelling Pharish. Also Fred and Nancy Farris Pollard. Now to enter the Territory of Texas in that time you had to have a Character Certificate which was a paper vouching for your character. I found a listing for John, Samuel, William, and Daniel, but not one for Squire. William and John's certificates state they were born in South Carolina and Samuel's states he was born in Kentucky these certificates are dated between 1833 and 1835. Now in Mississippi in 1810 there was a Thomas Farris in the Natchez District. He had seven males and three females in his household. Now if you take the marriage records I mentioned and subtract at least 22 years for the males and 18 - 20 years for the females you would reach an approximate birth year. These birth years fit the Thomas Farris 1810 information except for one male. So I have been trying to research the probability that these marriages were in fact Thomas Farris's children. I also found a Thomas Farris and wife in the 1790 South Carolina census that could be our Thomas but have not been able to confirm this as yet. I also have an abstract of a will in South Carolina for a John Wallace in which it states one of John's daughters was the wife of Thomas Farris. Again I have not been able to prove whether this is our Thomas or not. Ok now that I have that covered lets get back to Nancy Farris Pollard and her being from South Carolina or not. Lets assume that my theory of brothers and sisters is correct so far. In the 1835 Texas census it lists Nancy and Fred as being 36 years old ( they would have been born 1799). Matilda 15 (born 1820), John D. 13 (born 1822), Silvester 11 (born 1824), Federic 10 (born 1825), Charlotte 7 (born 1828), Lewis R. 4 ( born 1831), Jackson 2 (born 1833 in Texas.) Information inside brackets () I added. John 35 years, William 40 years, Samuel 28 years and Squire 26 years. William and John's character certificates state they were born in South Carolina so Nancy being between them in age it would put her being born in South Carolina too. Samuel's Character certificate states he was born in Kentucky. So somewhere around 1790 a family began in South Carolina and moved around 1800 to Kentucky. while in Kentucky at least three children were born my Great - Great Grandfather Samuel Farris, Lucinda and Squire. Then in 1806 Thomas bought land in Mississippi and moving to Mississippi about 1809 where I think he may have married again and had five more children. Alfred, Sarah, and Matilda were born in Mississippi. Mike I have sent this information to the list before and it should be in the archives about four or five years ago. I hope it is not to jumbled up being my memory is not the best it could be. Let me hear from you again real soon. Estelle, I think this is good news. However, for some reason, Mike's query did not show up in my inbox or on your reply. I'd really like to see it.
