Jim . . . I found an extract from that plat book reprinted in: "South Carolina Historical Magazine," Vol. 59, p. 73. It was listed under a section titled: "Surveys and Leases Within Indian Lands, York and Lancaster Counties, SC (c. 1795-1829)." The extract was taken from p. 93 of the original plat book. It lists "Fairies, Alexr." as the lessee; lease dated June 2, 1813. Location: "Y.D. Catawba River, Indian Hook branch," and was 744 acres. Under "Editorial Remarks" it states: "Resurveyed: Aug. 26, 1812, by John Faires, surveyor, for Alexr. Faries, Sr." On that same page of SCHM is another extract taken from p. 279 of the plat book. It lists the lessees as "Farris, John and Alexr." for a property at "Indian Hook Shoals." Under Editorial Remarks it states: "See Alsey Fuller." Fuller's extract was also taken from p. 279 of the original plat book. It describes the property as 112 acres "Near Indian Hook Shoals, east of Alexr. Faires'," lease dated Aug. 29, 1816. Editorial Remarks: "Formerly John Farises'." It's interesting to note that in reference to two men, the surname is spelled five different ways in total (three variations on a single entry); Alexander's was subjected to four variations, and John three. Jennet Faires Has anyone seen or have a copy of the plat of Alex. Faires' land mentioned below? Jim Faires http://src1.cas.sc.edu/dept2/iss/SCNames/index.php?action=showPage&book=1&vo lume=4&page=1 "In the Winter 1956 edition of Names in South Carolina readers are invited to submit information on various places, the name of one being India Hook Road in York County. "We have found several references to a name which is obviously the source for the name `India Hook Road.' In the Surveyor's Plat Book and Indian Com- missioner Rent Book there is a plat of Alex. Fairies's land which is partly bound by "mdi Hook Branch," flowing into the Catawba River. This plat is dated 1813. Another plat, dated 1816, shows `a piece of land laid off . . . from land formerly John Faris'es near Indian Hooke Shoals.' These two references are the earliest of which we have any record. We assume that `India Hook Branch,' a shallow bit of water with- in the `Indian Land,' was the origin of the name in use today. We shall be interested to learn other infor- mation or any corroboration of our assumption. ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to FARRIS-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message ________________________________________________________________________ AOL now offers free email to everyone.
