    3. I ran across this will accidentally in the Sumter Co., SC, probate records. Presumably he must have moved fairly recently.[I have regularized most of the spelling and punctuation.) "State of South Carolina, York District. In the name of God, amen. I John W. Faris of the State and District aforesaid, being weak of body but of sound and disposing mind and understanding, and knowing that all men have to die, do make and constitute the following for my last Will and Devise, hereby revoking all others; in the first place I commend my soul to God who gave it and direct that my body be buried in a decent and Christian like manner; in the second place Viz. I direct that all my lawful debts be paid that is rendered in duly attested; the balance shall be put to interest by my lawful Executor, the interest whereof to go to the support of my honored mother during her natural life, and after her death it shall be appropriated in the following manner, viz. to my beloved sister Nancy Sloane, I give and bequeath two hundred dollars; to my sister Sarah Hill I give and bequeath one hundred and sixty dollars; to my sister Peggy Downing, I give and bequeath the sum of twenty five dollars; to my sister Jane Brown I give and bequeath the sum of fifty dollars; to my brother Samuel Faris, I give and bequeath the sum of fifteen dollars; my plantation with all its appurtenances together with all the balance of cash after all the above legacies are paid I give and bequeath unto my brother William Faris; and after his death to his son John Faris, to be vested in him and the heirs of his body forever. Lastly and I do further constitute and ordain Francis Spring Esquire my sole Executor for to execute this my last will and testament as above directed: Given under my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of March in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and thirteen and in the thirty seventh year of the American Independence. John W. Faris signed sealed and acknowledged by the said testator as and for his last will and devise in our presence who in his presence and at his request witnessed the same: Leonard Moore A.J. Williams John King NB before signing, that if any of my legatees will in any shape whatever attempt or endeavour to brake [sic] or attempt to brake the above will they shall be cut off with one shilling J.- W. - F. - [Proved in Sumter District, 7th April 1813. From Sumter Co., SC, Probate Bundles, Bundle 37, packet 2; LDS Film #216935. Note that the estate accounts include: "To Francis Spring's expenses going to York on his business...to one saddle and bridle paid to his brother John Jackson Sloane by his request." Also in this file is a letter from Forrest W. Faris of 1125 Atwater Ave., Bloomington, IN, dated Nov. 29, 1951. This is not my line so I can't add anything!! Hope it helps someone. Carol York
