    1. [FARRIS-L] FARRIS
    2. by way of Wanda Rabb
    3. Hi Wanda, It has been a while since I have posted my FARRIS line, so I thought I would try again. My great grandfather Richard FARRIS was born in April 1839 in Missouri. (Information taken from the Twelfth Census of the United States, 1900.) His father was born Tennessee; his mother was born in Mississippi. Richard married Julia COTNER August 3, 1865, in Morgan County, Missouri. (Julia and her parents were born in Tennessee.) There was another wedding on the same date - Rabecca Ann FARRIS and Andrew COTNER; we are assuming this is a sister of Richard and a brother of Julia. The same justice of the peace performed both marriages. On the 1900 Census form, it is stated Richard and Julia had six children. We know of five: William David, born 1868, Missouri Joil Lee, born February 23, 1870, Texas (my grandfather) (The 1910 and 1920 census says he was born in TX; other family members say he was born in MO) Alice, born 1874 Oscar C, Born February 10, 1878, Texas Edgar, born November 15, 1882, Indian Territory (Hughes County, Oklahoma). Julia died July 2, 1904 and Richard died August 9, 1904, in Hughes County, Indian Territory. We believe Richard's parents were Sampson and Modest FARRIS (found in the 1850 Census of Moniteau County Missouri). Age Place of Birth FARRIS Sampson 40 TN Modeste 45 MO Thomas 20 MO Lydia 16 MO Jane 14 MO RICHARD 13 MO Daniel 10 MO REBECCA 8 MO James 5 MO David 2 MO In the 1840 Census of Cole County, Missouri, Sampson FARRIS and the following listing is recorded: Males - Under 5 2 5-10 1 30-40 1 Females - Under 5 1 5-10 1 30-40 1 Sampson FARRIS and a "female, aged 20-30", are found in the 1830 Census of Cooper County, Missouri. Sampson, Modist and family moved before 1860 to Vernon County, Mo in Little Osage Twp. They were on the census at p. 99 dwelling 715, family no. 683 as: S M Farris 51--male--farmer--Tenn Modist Farris 55--female--Mo Rebecca Farris 18--female-- Mo James M. Farris 15--male--MO David Farris 12--male--Mo Sampson Farris married Modist Westbrook (a daughter of Richard Westbrook) on Dec. 24, 1829 in Cooper County, MO. Modist was born around 1804 or 1805 in New Madrid, MO. It appears that Sampson was born about 1810. Sampson died-in the fall of 1863. Thank you, Vel
