Here is another thought, some of these people were exciled to the US because they "done wrong" and they were to serve time and return to the home land. If they did not want to go back, they could have changed the spelling of the name, to stay undercover. If they did not want to fight in the wars, they could have registered under a different name or spelling also........only male in family taking care of family might not have wanted to go to war. There are endless reasons why these names are different. Even people who could not read, write and spell....... Carole :}
