When people came here from other countries, and they were naturalized they sometimes picked the name, or the person writing the paperwork picked the name, or they picked the name of the sponsor, who got them over here. Or they spelled it as they heard it with the accent. There is no sure facts that the names are really of that person, without going back to the homeland and the "given name at birth". I have a Greek Great Grandfather who was Marrally (some kind of spelling) and when he was naturalized it was LEE. He lived in Va. and was no relation to Robert E. Lee or any of the Va Lees. His parents died young, brother drowned, and he came here alone. Just took Lee as last part of his name, and he sure messed me up with his research!!!! Nothing is as it seems in research with verification. Keeps us all scratching our heads...... Carole :}
