Topeka (KS) Capital Journal December 7, 1998 OTTAWA (KS) -- Graveside services will be at 10am Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery west of here for Dr Merle L FARRIS, 87, Morristown TN, a former Kansas, who died Saturday Dec 5, 1998, at home. He was a veterinarian. He was born Feb 23, 1911, in the Argentine community in Wyandotte County (KS), and spent his early life in Kansas. He was graduated from Kansas State University in Manhattan. He worked for the U S Dept of Agriculture's Bureau of Animal Industry three years. He served five years in the Army, having held the rank of first lieutenant in the Veterinary Corps. He later was a major in the Army Reserve. He transferred to the Air Force in 1954 and held the rank of lieutenant Colonel before he retired. He attended the Army Medical Activity Drawdown Ceremony in 1992 in berlin where he was recognized as the former commander of one of the two oldest unite permanently garrisoned in Berlin since World War II. Dr Farris was a partner with Dr S B ISBELL in the Animal Hospital in Morristown TN from 1946 until 1979 when he retired. They had been honored at veterinarians of the year in Tennessee. He had served as president of the East Tennessee Veterinary Assn and the Tennessee Veterinary Assn. He was a member of First Baptist Church in Morristown TN, where he served as a deacon and disbursing officer and was a member of the capital steering committee for the 1985 building program. He was a past president of the kiwanis Club and a member of a Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite bodies, all in Morristown, and a member of Kerbela Shrine in Knoxville TN. He and his wife, Myrna, lived in Morristown many years. She survives. Other survivors include a daughter, Sharon BOLESTA, Dallas; sisters, Mrs Lawrence WRIGHT, Ottawa, and Mrs Luther MAGERS, Sierra Vista AZ; and a grandson. Memorial contributions may be made to greenwood Baptist Church, Route 3, Ottawa 66067. Mayes Mortuary in Morristown is in charge of arrangements. Dengel & Son Mortuary in Ottawa is in charge of Kansas arrangements.
