When they did this, they created a whole new group of mailing lists for various surnames, several of which are variations of the surname we deal with on the Farris-L. As you know, we have tried to address all variations of spelling on the Farris-L. Some of the new lists that were created are FARIS-L, FAIRES-L, and PHARES-L. The current listowners were given an opportunity to "adopt" these new lists that are variations of spellings of our current lists (i.e. FARRIS-L). I did volunteer to take on the FARIS-L and FAIRES-L, but to be honest, the PHARES-L slipped by me when I applied. I am not sure anyone has adopted this list yet. I have applied for this one, but would be more than happy to relinquish the list (if I end up with it) to anyone interested in hosting it! I have mixed feelings about the creation of all of these lists. While on the surface, it appears to be a positive move, there are a lot of problems inherent with having too many lists that deal with the same surname. We could end up with splintering of the group, excessive cross-postings to all of the lists, etc. Personally, I have enjoyed having this one list where we can all share regardless of how we spell the name. This way no one misses something that could be important to their research. On the other hand, a new researcher may log onto the Rootsweb Mailing List site and think there is not a list for their surname if they don't find the exact spelling they use. In addition, new GenConnect Boards were also created for each spelling derivation as well, so this just adds yet another place people can post their queries, information, etc. Again, this could be good but means we may have to check multiple boards to stay on top of things. We have over 200 researchers on the Farris-L and I think there has been a great deal of cohesiveness in this group. For that, I am grateful! I hope the creation of these new surname lists will not weaken this list but will enhance everyone's research.
