So many of you in the Faires/Farris Family have already been such help to me and here I am once again asking for even more information. This is my situation: My G-G-G-Grandparents were JOHN ADIAR b. mid 1700's married JEAN FAIRES b. 1765 to James Faires and Jean Adair in York Co. SC. in about 1788-89. As far as I can tell they were the only Adair family in York Co. SC. Census records show John Adair as head of household in 1800 and 1810 but in 1820 show only Jean Adair as head of household. My John Adair must have died between 1810 & 1820. John & Jean Faires Adair had two sons, James T. Adair (My GGGrandfather) and William. Naturally I am trying to find the parents of John Adair. As far as I can tell these are true facts. There was (I think) about the same time, another JOHN ADAIR in Pendleton Dist. Duncan's Creek area who was the son of James Adair that was knowledgeable and wrote extensively about several tribes of Indians. The writings by and about this line of Adairs makes it easy to get their information. This JOHN ADAIR first married a lady by the name of Foster (who was an Indian from GA). They had a number of children and she died. Then this JOHN ADAIR married a lady named JANE/JEAN (FARRIS) KILGORE. They had a number of children too, one who was of course named James and close, I think, to the age of my James T. Adair. One researcher I've been in touch with says that this Jane/Jean's maiden name was KILGORE. Other researchers thinks that her maiden name was FARRIS and she was a widow of a Kilgore. As far as I know, no one has proof of either of these theries or do they have information as to how the name FARRIS got attached to Jane/Jean. My interest in getting to the bottom of all this is to be able to prove that this JOHN ADAIR and JANE/JEAN are not connected to my family. If they are, then that is great, but right now it appears that there are either 4 people and if only 2 then how could they be at 2 places about the same time. To complicate matters more, it seems that both John Adairs died about the same time. The one in Pendleton Dist.had his will probated in 1815 and there is proof of that. As I recall, he was buried in Anderson SC. So far I have no way to prove where the other John Adair was buried but I assume (which I know better than to do) that he was burie! d in York Co.SC. Do any of you Faires/Farris have any knowledge of the Pendleton Dist. Farris family? I have posted this question also in the Pendleton Dist. site but so far have not heard anything. If I ever get this straight I will post the conclusions here in case it helps someone else. Thanks for all the help that so many in this family has given me in the past. Nell Adair Lewis
