10 Feb 1911 ..... a section of county extending along river for 6-7 miles has been owned principally by the Faris or descendants as far back as I can trace. Your Alex must have lived in this same section. Long John Faris is only one of the older ones that raised his family elsewhere. His home was down-river ca 10 miles below Rock Hill and our neighborhood is from 5-10 mies above RH. Yes, I know old Aunt Hattie Sturges was a Strain. She had a sister Sallie. She is quite old now & not mentally able to give info. I have learned the home of the old Strain families was only c 2 miles from old home of James Faris b. 1768. There are no Strains here now and few descendants. No, James 1768 father was not named Alex, but my gr grfather Alex b. 1750 was James 1768 Uncle. James m. Mary Faris Dinsmore, widowed dau. of Alex. 1750 & sister of my grfather. By Dinsmore she had one dau, Dorcas, who m. James Carothers. Dorcas & James were parents of Harriet who m. "Long John" A. Faris, father of Tirzah Fewell. Mary then m. her 1st cousin James Faris & had one dau. Mary, who m. Wm. Youngblood and had Wm. O. & Dorcas, who m. Steven Huddleston. I don't think it would be possible to locate the site of the gin your gr grfather owned as you say it was burned in 1822 . . . my old uncle Samuel Dinsmore Faris 1818-1909. My father's oldest 1/2 brother was Miles Faris b. 1805 & lived to be over 90. 5 graves in cemetery at Ebenezer 3 miles NW of Rock Hill spelled Ferris. Never able to find who they were. John Ferris d. 1 Feb 1804 age 74 Ann Ferris d. 7 June 1803 age 95 Mary Alexander d. ____ 1800 age 72 Ester Ferris d. 14 Nov 1795 age 10 Rachel Ferris d. 15 Nov 1795 age 2 Mrs. Fewell's father's home was in Catawba Twp but think he was raised farther up the river near where the So. R. Road crosses the river. My sister Lillian lives in Columbia & examined all the old records with the assistance of the Sec. of State, but found nothing of any help to us. Wm. O. Youngblood says he & brothers & sisters were orphaned when he was 11 in 1844 & he and 1 sister lived with grparents James and Mary Faris. James d. 28 Oct 1850. Mary d. 24 Sept 1853. Says James was living on same plantation where he was born, having come in possession of our gr grfather's father's old home where he 1st settled when he came to SC. James erected another house for himself. The old home had been destroyed in some way at that time. He told me I would find the old cellar of the original house c 150 yards fr ma spring -- which I did. It is c 200 yds from the river on west bank c 1 miles above Alison Crk. Now owned by So. Power Co. . . . nothing but barren washed-away hill with only old cellar and a few fruit trees, brick bats & crockery pieces . . . He said James' 1768 father was either James or John and he thought James. Said his grmother had told him that James' 1768 father was a weavfer and wove cloth for the public & that he would weave meal sacks for himself he would always weave in different colors hi initials IF in the sacks & that old Aunt Mary always told him that in those days I stood for J. He (Wm. O.) gave me an old spoon that had been made in a pair of his gr grfather's spoon moulds & on it are the initials IF. He thought James had a brother Alex. & well remembered that he would get letters from relatives in the west. He remembered that James 1768 had a bachelor nephew who lived in Mo. near the Miss. River who visited him. He took Long John Faris back with him & tried to induce him to make his home there. He said James 1768 and his wife were 1st cousins. Wm. Carothers has old paper handed down for several generations stating the families of Carothers, Faris, Neely, Miller & Dinsmore all settled in York Co. 1750 and came from York, Lancaster & Union Cos. Penn. It was not signed, but probably true. W.O.Y. also said James 1768 had the original title from King George and that the place was not included in the Catawba Indian reservation as I had thought. I am inclined to believe John Ferris buried Ebenezer was your gr gr (gr?) grfather.
