We are working on the line of Robert Faries, an Irishman, 1727 who owned land in New Castle Co. Red Lion Hundred. His family seems to have been large, and migrated down to Smyrna and Dover DE area (where my GGGrandfather's family was) and it is rumored they came down from Conn., as part of the original settlers who came in there. What I do is take notes, or photocopy any information I find in my travels of research. I began taking evrything down when I started, as I didn't know who went with who, and as time is moving on, there are connections being made with other people out there who have kin from this main branch in New Castle. Steve Wheeler is in Colorado, and one of the boys of Robert, we think William, took his son from New Castle DE to Ohio and on from there. Steve is married to Diane Faries of that line. Steve has been working very hard on the tax records and census. Gail and I are working on tax records also, backfilling what we need. We also have many wills, that we got from the Dover Archives. I sat and wrote down every name in the card files, for Faries (sp) that pertained to vital records. We found a connection with Warren (Baton Rouge, La) as his GGGranfather Samuel was a brother to my GGGrandfather Alfred. We have met his family in Dover and Cheswold DE, and they are the sweetest people. We hope to pull from the main files, and seperate the family line for Samuel and his wife Margaret Burgin. We also have a good clue as to Samuel's parents and Grandparents and have to continue to research and verify that information. That would jump us back to GGGGGrandparents....all of whom seem to come from the New Castle Co. lines. I have been working for about 7 years with the line of Alexander Faries from the Faries Funeral Home (7th generation in that business) and have extensive history on that line of Alexander. Lex, just passed last July, so Gail and I will need to sit with his wife Nancy and see what she has on the South Carolina and Tenn lines. My family (GGGrandparents, and GGrandparents) are buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna, DE. This family settled there and stayed there for several generations and there is a treasure trove of information there on them also. I have a packette out to the cemetery to get information from the records on file. (there are many names in that immediate family) Steve Wheeler, had someone who moved to California, send me census that showed my connection of Alfred and Samuel, but we didn't connect it until Warren did and located us via the internet. There is a Betsy Faris who lives in Mo. she has this family also when they moved out of DE. It is the same family of Alexander who married Jannett James in 1765 in DE, and moved to South Carolina and died there. She claims that Alexander left town, and we are not going in the right direction, but we have many Alexanders buried right there in Smyrna, DE who are coming off that line. There is so much more that we need to research. We haven't gotten into the Wilmington Courthouse as of yet! So much to do, and so little time. I was thinking that surely everyone else is doing as we are....gathering with the hope of connection in the future. If each of us took the states of availability and combined and shared our information, we could really hit pay dirt with this group. I also have census from Ireland on Ferris (sp) and they did come in here from Ireland. I have a file chuck full of sea captains, that came in and out of Philly ports and down the southern coast. There was a treasure trove of military records for this family from New Castle also...from King George's war forward....they were very active in the wars. I have been trying to gather history of the areas, old maps, and information that can let us know how they lived, and more clues. Gail and I have found obits which are very valuable (1800's) to family lines. We have found info in newspaper articles about different family members and the things they did, and comings and goings. I have entered all in Word 97, in main and sub files, with bold and other indicators to highlite who is who, and important information about them. This Ziba Ferris line is hooked in also, we just have not found the connections. That is why I tend to lean to, if everyone is gathering as we are, and trying to connect.....and we all have the same master information to pull from....look at the possibilities that could occur. If we could all work together for the coommon goal of the mail links, and help each other research in our states of availability we could find out roots so very much faster. I am not in this for "glory" or to write a book and make money! I am in this to find my family of origin, and put it down for the generations that come after me....that is my goal. I am not in this to be "RIGHT" and prove others wrong. I am here to help and hopefully find others who are willing to help by sharing information to the common goals. Someday, God willing, I hope to walk the lands of my ancestors in Ireland and Scotland, and see where I began. I know there is much more research ahead, but for all of us to be struggling when we can help each other find the way, seems senseless to me at best. Sincerely Carole Faries Werner
