Cox, Keeper of Archives and Museum, State of Tennessee, * Dept. of Education, May 12, 1932 Mr. Mora B. Fariss, Clerk and Master, Columbia, Tenn. Dear Mr. Fariss: In making classification of the records of the State of Tennessee, found a petition, which petition was filed in 1826 by a man named Johnson Farris, in which it appears he came with Colonel John Doleson from Virginia to the French Lick. He also saw service with General Clark in the Wabash Indian Expedition. Thinking probably this would be of historical interest to you and your people, I am sending you copy herewith. Will be glad to have you examine. the original in my office, at any time. Petition is filed in the file of Legislative Petitions for the year 1826. Very truly P.E. Cox Keeper of Archives and Museum ---------- PETITION The Honourable The General Assembly of the State of Tennessee The Petition of Johnson Farris a citizen of Kentucky Respectfully represents that in the year 1779, Col. John Doleson of Halifax Co. Virginia where said Farris then lived informed the citizens of that county that the Government had offered a bounty of land in the country near the French Licks on Cumberland River where Nashville now stands to any male twenty one years of age and upwards who would become a citizen build a cabbin rais corn & willing to encounter the danger and privation & impulse by a desire to better his condition in life. Your petitioner determined then abut 18 years of age, and being duly enrolled determined to accompany Col. Doleson not doubting but if he Served that he should received the promised bounty of land. They commenced their journey in the fall of 79 as far as the long island of Holston River and therein wintered. In March they left there with a considerable number of others to persue the rout by water down the Tennessee river in flat bottom boats in which they went through many perrileous dangerss by water and with the Indians being three times attach by them in the voge bearine a loss of about 40 or 50 killed. Said Farris himself wounded and a very considerable loss of property amonost the company, at length after a voge of about eight weeks the arrived at the destined spot where Nashville is now situate with Col. John Doleson at their head. all much work out with the toils of the way. Said Farris then proceeded to comply with the requisitions of Government to obtain the bounty of land which he complyed with in evert respect, and when his claims was presented to General Robertson the commssisoned for the government he said that it was entirely out of his power to grant him the land owing to his being under 21 years of age. Express his deep regret that one who had so richly earned his reward should be debarred by a provision in the law as arbitrary an unjust. Shortly after which your petitioner left there without receiving any compensation or ever making further application, he then moved to Wilsons Station near Harrodsburg, Kentucky, near which place he now lives, he has been exposed to all the hardships that the fronteer settlements were subject to having went several expeditions against the Indians one of which was that commanded by General Clark against the Indians on the Wabash river where land was again proffered by the Government which he has never obtained or any compensation and that without any fault of his own, he now is an old man in indegent circumstances with numerous and dependent family. He lays his claims before your Honourable boddy hopping and believing that by mature deliberaton the many dangers hazzards and privations your petitioner has underwent in making a settlement in a wilderness country, that they will consisant with the principals of honour and right grant unto him a lot or portion of land belonging to that state or any other compensation which your honourable boddy may think fit. to the honour and magnamity of the state he appeals to do something for him in his old age, and it will meet with the approbation of your petitioners friends as follows. Robt. Schooling John Sweeney Jeramicah Lowe Samuel Wilson also many other namesss some of which cannot be read Washington County (I believe this to be KY - skm) Personally appeared before me a Justice of the Peace for said County, Johnson Farris, and made oath that the within Instrument of writing contained the truth given under my hand this the 4th day of November, 1826. Wm. Willis J.P. Oct 1827 Lincoln Co. KY: Bond of James Yocum to marry America Farris, with Stephen Farris as surety, October 6, 1827. Consent of JOHNSON FARRIS for his daughter, October 3, 1827, witnessed by Perry Reynolds. Consent by Matthew Yocum for his son, who is a minor, same date, witnessed by Perry Reynolds. (5) 24 Sep 1832 Washington Co. KY. Johnson made oath that Elijah's (4-22) claim for Pension was valid. Johnson lived in Halifax, Pittsylvania and Botetourt Counties, VA Lincoln and Washington Counties, KY Washington, Daviess, Orange and Martin Counties, IN May have been in Dewitt County IL TENNESSEE GENEALOGICAL RECORDS - Whitley, p. 156 "Petition of Johnson Farris, an old soldier of the Revolution, found in the State Archives and Land Office. This petition is dated Washington Co. TN, 1826. The papers are in regard to Johnson Farris and John Donelson in the year 1779." (Here Whitley says it was Washington Co. TN, but since we know Johnson lived in Washington Co. KY I still think that that is where the Petition was originated and sworn to. skm) NOTE: Compare Johnson's Petition above with Elijah's (4-22) Revolutionary War Pension application. They were both with Donelson and apparently on the same expedition. This would seem to indicate that the others who were recipients of the North Carolina Land Grants were also with Donelson (Donaldson). (skm)
