He was born July 16, 1909 in Cananea, Mexico. He was the son of a mining engineer and grew up in Terra Buena, Sutter County, during the Great Depression. He valued education and worked his way through San Jose State University where he majored in economics. He worked at Worley's Bakery and Agnew State Hospital to support himself. Although he initially started at Stanford Law School, he left to work for New York Life. With determination he became a Life Member of the Million Dollar Round table and enjoyed bringing his wife on extravagant vacations once a year. He was past president of the San Jose Life Underwriters Association. He worked for New York Life for 50 years and was one of their top national agents. He also was an avid real estate investor. He started investing in local properties at 26 years of age and then expanded to Mobile Home Parks. He was past President of the Tri-County Apartment House Association. He wa! s active in religious organizations such as Serra International and became a Knight of Malta. Those who knew him recall his positive attitude and living each day to the fullest. Some of his favorite sayings include "Never Give Up," "What the mind can perceive, the heart can believe, you can achieve," "If God and your spouse are with you, who could ever be against you," and " You have two choices in life: Be Happy or Be Unhappy." He was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Mildred Brown Farris. He is survived by his sister Helen Frank (Richard), Daughter Valerie Bovone (Richard), Son Ray K. Farris II (Giselle), Grandchildren Karen Boswell (Jim), Nancy Brightman (Rich), John Bovone (Kimberly), Chris Bovone (Kelly), Suzanne Smith (Tim), Shannon Cronan (Dan) Laurie Jaquez (Mike), and Jill Bovone, and great-grandchildren Mason, Dylan & Aaron Boswell, Zachary & Sabrina Brightman, Jack, Nathan & Gavin Bovone, Giavanna & Luca Bovone, Sean Patrick & Kelly Leigh Cronan, and Ryder Jaquez. Friends are invited to attend a visitation Sunday, January 7, 2007, beginning at 4:00 p.m. and a Vigil Service at 7:00 p.m. at LIMA FAMILY-ERICKSON MORTUARY, 710 Willow St., San Jose. A Funeral Mass will be celebrated Monday, January 8, 2007, commencing at 11:00 a.m. at St. Christophers Church, (Booksin & Curtner Ave.) San Jose. Interment to follow at Santa Clara Mission Cemetery. She was born in Winslow on Sept. 5, 1908, the daughter of Edmond and Georgianna Dostie. Yvonne was a member of the Silver Lake Grange, attended China Baptist Church, and was a member of the Margaret Stotsenburgh Bible study. Yvonne was the holder of the Boston Post Cane as the oldest resident of China. She loved her vegetable and flower gardens (especially tomatoes), her wild birds, and all children. He was the son of Anna Mary Davenport of Silver Spring, Md., and the late Edgar Hobert Farris. He was preceded in death by his wife, Dixie Lee Farris. He served in the U.S. Air Force. He was employed with Verizon, retiring after 37 years. He was a member of C.W.A. Local 2105 for 15 years and served as president. He was a member of the American Legion, Williamsport Post 202. Farris died of cancer on December 12, 2006 at her home in Croasdaile Village in Durham. She was born in Penney Farms, FL, on September 13, 1926 to Irene and Milton Lockhart. The family moved to the Chicago area when Joyce was two, and she grew up in Downers Grove, Illinois. At age 16, Joyce left home to attend Berea High School in Berea, KY. During the summer of 1944, she worked as an attendant in a Milwaukee sanitarium. At age 18, she entered Berea College and graduated in 1948 with a B.A. in Philosophy. She entered Duke Divinity School in the fall of 1948 and studied there until 1950. Joyce worked in the office of the Dean of the Divinity School and for Professor Shelton Smith during 1948, and held secretarial positions at Duke University through 1956. On November 20, 1956, she married Donn Michael Farris in Suffolk, VA. Her husband, the former Director of Duke's Divinity School Library, preceded her in death in 2005. Mrs. Farris worked as a medical secretary for Dr. Julian Ruffin from 1956 until 1978. In 1970, she entered the School of Information and Library Science at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and received her Master's in Library Science in 1974. In 1978, she began working as a catalog librarian in Duke's Perkins Library, where she put to excellent use her knowledge of seven languages. She retired from the Library in 1992. >From 1950 until 1992, she was the Recording Secretary of the American Theological Library Association (ATLA), and was a lifetime member. Joyce Lockhart Farris is survived by her son, Evan Farris, his wife, Susan, and their sons, Austin and Sean of Springfield, VA; by her daughter, Amy Farris Kilbride, her husband, Patrick, and their daughter, Kelsea of Superior, CO; by her brother, George Lockhart his wife, Rebecca, and their daughter, Tamara of Jacksonville, FL, and their son, Gregory of Columbia, SC; and by a nephew, Steven Abbott of Salinas, CA, and a niece, Gwen Eaton of Las Vegas, NV. Joyce brought light and laughter to the world and o her family and her many friends. She will be greatly missed and always remembered. It was her wish that memorial gifts be designated for Berea College (by mail to Berea College, CPO 2216, Berea, KY 40404, or online at www.berea.edu/friendsdonors/makinggift.asp ). A memorial service will be held on January 3, 2007 at 2 p.m. in the Goodson Chapel at the Duke University Divinity School.
