    1. [FARRIS] Text of Alex. Faries Sen'r's 744 acre platt
    2. Daniel B. Troublefield
    3. Jim, I'll send you a scan of the plat directly as attachments can't reach the mail list. Alexander Faries (1740-1824) and his wife Janet (James) Faries (1745-1825) came down to the Carolinas about 1778 and settled near the line between the colonies of North & South Carolina. The surviving Surveyor's Plat Book and Indian Commissioner's Rent Book was kept by Hugh White, one of the commissioners, and inherited by his descendant Miss Zoe White of Fort Mill, SC. She allowed photostatic copies of the book to be made by the South Carolina Archives and one copy was made for the Rock Hill Public Library (now York County Library). The Rent Book section shows Alexander Faries' sons Jesse & William as the holders of the leased land after Alexander died in 1824. Alex's name is crossed out and Jessee & Wm. is written over it. The plat is a drawing of the boundaries of the 744 acres. It shows the Catawba River as the southern boundary and the meandering "Indi hook Branch" going back & forth over the western line. Various boundary trees and stakes are indicated along the lines of the plat. Written across the drawn map: "Alex'r Faries's Platt 744 acres" The following text appears below the drawn map: So Carolina } York District } The above platt represents a tract or parcel of land the same being Indian Land and lying in the Indian boundary and hath Such Shape and Form as the platt above Shows and was resurveyed for Alex'r Faries Sen'r. by John Faries Surveyor August 12th 1812. And lease has been granted thereon to Alex'r Faries this 2nd June 1813 Test' George Massey } Thos. Robertson } S.C.I.N. H White} [End of text below the plat.] Please note that this plat is described by the surveyor as a "re-survey", meaning there may have been earlier plats that had to be redrawn as the tract decreased or increased in size as parts were subleased to others or additional tracts were added. However, no such earlier plats survive. The Catawba Indian leases changed hands a good deal. Alexander's son- in-law Samuel Dunsmore had an Indian lease and his former lease passed to others in the family. Alexander's son John Faries died in 1815 and his land was bought by Alexander Faries and Alsey Fuller. Alex's son John was NOT the surveyor who continued to work until 1822 and died in 1825. The lease holders often controlled scattered tracts within the Indian boundary. There were sub-leases to others for cash and some leases passed by inheritance. Louise Pettus has published an excellent study of the leases called "Leasing Away a Nation". An appendix at the end lists all of the leaseholders she has been able to identify and a little info about their leases that she found through years of research in the Catawba Indian files at the South Carolina State Archives in Columbia, SC. She tells that there was another lease book for the other side of the Catawba River, but it was lost in a fire when the Indian agent's home burned. The records for some of those other leases can be partially reconstructed with the plat books for the 1840's when the State of South Carolina made a treaty with the Catawbas and converted the leases into state land grants. Only a few of the leases are mentioned in York Co., SC, deed records, primarily because the leases were not considered real estate. The holders did not own the land, but in practice many lease holders treated the land as though they did own it. 1. Re: [FARRIS] Indian Hook-Alex m. Jennet Faires
    2. Jim . . . I found an extract from that plat book reprinted in: "South Carolina Historical Magazine," Vol. 59, p. 73. It was listed under a section titled: "Surveys and Leases Within Indian Lands, York and Lancaster Counties, SC (c. 1795-1829)." The extract was taken from p. 93 of the original plat book. It lists "Fairies, Alexr." as the lessee; lease dated June 2, 1813. Location: "Y.D. Catawba River, Indian Hook branch," and was 744 acres. Under "Editorial Remarks" it states: "Resurveyed: Aug. 26, 1812, by John Faires, surveyor, for Alexr. Faries, Sr." On that same page of SCHM is another extract taken from p. 279 of the plat book. It lists the lessees as "Farris, John and Alexr." for a property at "Indian Hook Shoals." Under Editorial Remarks it states: "See Alsey Fuller." Fuller's extract was also taken from p. 279 of the original plat book. It describes the property as 112 acres "Near Indian Hook Shoals, east of Alexr. Faires'," lease dated Aug. 29, 1816. Editorial Remarks: "Formerly John Farises'." It's interesting to note that in reference to two men, the surname is spelled five different ways in total (three variations on a single entry); Alexander's was subjected to four variations, and John three. 1. [FARRIS] Jane Hannah (Faries) Rooker Henderson born 1809 NC or SC
    2. Daniel B. Troublefield
    3. Have tried & tried to prove the family of my own Mary (Farris) Ferguson, but my latest effort shed some light instead on the fate of a different Faries female. There has been some confusion about the wife of Joseph Dorris Rooker who died 1836 in upper York County, South Carolina. Direct descendants knew his wife's name was Jane. Some collateral descendants had stated that he was married to a Hannah Faris. Census records supported the name Jane. Two census records (1840 & 1850) showed her name as Jane H. That, together with her estimated birth in 1809 and her naming a son Moses Farris Rooker, pointed me to a Jane H. Faries, born in 1809, whose life history after 1820 was unknown. She lived next to her brother Moses T. Faries in 1840. Jane Hannah Faries was the daughter of Moses Faries (born in what later became York Co., SC; died 1812 in Illinois Territory) and his wife Mary (born also in South Carolina, probably in what became York Co., SC; died between 1840-1848 York Co., SC). Jane Hannah was born in 1809, possibly in the part of Rutherford Co. that was cut off in 1841 to form Cleveland Co., NC, or else near Bethel Presbyterian Church in York Co., SC, as her three brothers were. Her ages and birthplaces in the census records: 1810 Moses Faries' family not found 1820 Mary Faries family: female age 10 to 15 [born 1805-1810] 1830 [family not found] 1840 Jane H. "Ruker" age 20-29 [born 1811-1820] 1850 Jane H. Rooker listed himself & both parents born SC 1880 her son J.L. Henderson listed himself & both parents born SC Her paternal grandparents were Robert Faries (born in northern Ireland; died 1803 York Co., SC) and Hannah (Faries) Faries (born in New Munster Township, Cecil Co., MD; died after 1831 in Hardeman Co., TN), who both moved to the Piedmont area of the Carolinas about 1768 from Pencader Hundred, New Castle County, Delaware (then part of Pennsylvania). Her mother's maiden name and parents are unknown. There is some indication that Mrs. Mary Faries might have been a Miller related to Miller families with ties to both Rutherford/Cleveland Counties, NC, and York County, SC. But the Miller connection may have been just one of friendship between neighbor families rather than a marriage kinship. From the names of children and grandsons the names Clayton and Templeton are repeated. Moses Faries was a miller and worked at "Miller's mill" on Stices Shoals of Broad River in Rutherford (now Cleveland) Co., North Carolina. He remained close enough to York Co., SC, to sell land there in 1805 and to witness a deed there in 1811. Right after that (during or just before the War of 1812) Moses moved his young family to land on the Wabash River in Illinois Territory. After Moses Faries' death by drowning in the river during a swim contest in 1812, his widow Mary moved back to South Carolina. The wife of Moses Faries (d. 1812) has been identified in the 1820 census, York Co., South Carolina, as Mary Faries with three small boys & one girl. It appears that Mary Faries, widow, lived with her son John B. Faries in 1830 and with her daughter Jane H. "Ruker" in 1840. It has been suggested that Mary Faries was buried at Bethany A.R.P. Church southwest of Clover, SC, but there is no stone there for her or at Enon where her sons are buried. Jane Hannah Faries married first Joseph Dorris Rooker and had four sons by him: Robert (died in infancy before 1839); William; John Clayton; and Moses Farris. Jane's first husband died in 1836 and she married a second time: Archibald Henderson, a South Carolina native, sometime after 1840 when she is still listed in the federal census as Jane H. "Ruker". There were children with Henderson as well. The Moses Faries listed next to her in the 1840 census was Moses Templeton Faries. He kept a family record in his Bible. It lists the death of another Moses Faries in 1812 and the births of four Faries children: Moses Templeton Faries Bible record: Moses Faries departed This Life July the 11. 1812. [Children of Moses Faries who died 1812] John B. Faries was born May the 10 1802 [his gravestone shows 1800] Robert M. Faries was Born July the 15 1804 Moses T. Faries Was Born October the 30= 1806 Jane H. Faries was Born May the 19 1809 Jane and her second husband Archibald moved to Gaston Co., NC, before the 1850 federal census was taken. From there they moved to Arkansas and later to Texas. I've tracked them through the census records. She died between 1870 & 1880 and he died after 1880 probably in Ellis Co., TX. I haven't been able to find where they are buried. If anyone discovers their graves, please let me know. Thanks, Dan
