    3. Gail - Thanks for the update! I sure wish that we lived close, but here I am up in the frozen swamplands (Minnesota). Nice in the summer, especially if it falls on a weekend. ;-) My heart, though, is in SW Ohio. We really have tons of info to exchange. And when you're searching indices, don't forget to check the "Ph...." spellings! Wilma Engelhart found her William Faris' m. record with the surname spelled "Pharroz"! Since I'm trying to get as much as possible prior to 1800, I'm very interested in just what we can share! Do you have a scanner? I do, so can send you copies of what I have, either e-mail or USPS. The search is wonderful and fun, but don't drive yourself TOO hard! I knew a lady years ago who had a bad "nervous breakdown", driving frantically from courthouse tocourthouse trying to find her Faris ancestors! She never fully recovered, and of course had to stay clear away from genealogy! Such a shame. I am collecting info from ALL Faris(sp) regardless of location. Are you only interested in the Delaware info? How about NJ, etc? More later, Wilma

    1. Re: [FARRIS-L] Wills of Alexander (1824) and James (1802)
    2. Wilma-- We are searching the Faries/Ferris, etc. everywhere. We have them from Connecticut, Penna., Delaware (of course), Maryland, South Carolina, the midwest, and Bermuda. And more I'm too tired to remember! Carole and I worked really hard the last couple of days. We are planning more trips! It's close enough to me that I may get to go by myself sometimes, but I need some time to get things together. I have MS and these research trips knock the stuffing out of me for a few days, but I love it!!! I don't have a scanner on my computer, but my son has one upstairs on his computer. (well, he will have a working one in about a week--his malfunctioned and they're sending him a new one). I want to scan pictures onto my computer. Then I can edit and resize them and put them on pages. That's what I did for my Heacock pictures. You have my email, so feel free to contact me at any time. Carole would also be glad to hear from you. We work very closely together are in contact quite often. It's hard not to become totally obsessed with this venture! I have only been working on my research for a little over six months, and the info I have is astounding to me. I am not only researching Faries, I am also researching several other major family names! Gets a little overwhelming at times! I would love to share info and I know Carole will feel that way too! (Right, Carole???). You have my email. My snail mail is Gail Faries 46 Second Avenue Claymont, DE 19703. Hoping to hear from you soon! Gail

    1. Re: [FARRIS-L] Farris Researcher List/Newsletter
    2. Hi Sandy, It's always good to see your name - we really appreciate the FARRIS Files and the great job that you do. In an E-mail dated January 29, 1999, you said: "I maintain a list of Farris/Pharis/Phares researchers with names, addresses, ancestors, etc. If anyone would like a copy I can send online if you have a program that can handle .dbf files (MS Works, etc.) or I will snail mail you one. I would also like to add your names, addresses and the Farris family you are interested in. We have almost 400 researchers so far and many have made valuable contacts through the list since I send a copy to all new Farris/Pharis contacts. We also have a Farris Newsletter so if anyone would like to submit queries and do not wish to give their snail mail addresses on this list, they may email me directly. Many of our readers do not have online capability so you will be reaching a new audience. Sandy " Please send a list of Farris/Pharis/Phares researchers with names, addresses, ancestors, etc. My great grandfather Richard FARRIS was born in April 1839 in Missouri. (Information taken from the Twelfth Census of the United States, 1900.) His father was born Tennessee; his mother was born in Mississippi. Richard married Julia COTNER August 3, 1865, in Morgan County, Missouri. (Julia and her parents were born in Tennessee.) There was another wedding on the same date - Rabecca Ann FARRIS and Andrew COTNER; we are assuming this is a sister of Richard and a brother of Julia. The same justice of the peace performed both marriages. On the 1900 Census form, it is stated Julia had six children. We know of five: William David, born 1868, Missouri Joil Lee, born February 23, 1870, Texas (my grandfather) Alice, born 1874 Oscar C, Born February 10, 1878, Texas Edgar, born November 15, 1882, Indian Territory (Hughes County, Oklahoma). We have found Richard and Julia FARRIS in the 1900 Census of Indian Territory (Oklahoma). The Census form shows his mother was born in Mississippi; however, there is a Mississippi County in Missouri, so we don't know if there was some confusion. We do not know her maiden name. My grandfather, Joil Lee, spent most of his adult life in Hughes County, Oklahoma. His brother, Will, spent most of his adult life in McLennan County, Texas. Julia died July 2, 1904 and Richard died August 9, 1904, in Hughes County, Indian Territory. We found the following listing in the 1850 Census of Moniteau County Missouri. Age Place of Birth FARRIS Sampson 40 TN Modeste 45 MO Thomas 20 MO Lydia 16 MO Jane 14 MO RICHARD 13 MO Daniel 10 MO REBECCA 8 MO James 5 MO David 2 MO It looks like our Richard and Rebecca could be part of the above listed children. It appears that Sampson was born about 1810. Sampson FARRIS and a "female, aged 20-30", are found in the 1830 Census of Cooper County, Missouri. In the 1840 Census of Cole County, Missouri, Sampson FARRIS and the following listing is recorded: Males - Under 5 2 5-10 1 30-40 1 Females - Under 5 1 5-10 1 30-40 1 Putting us on the list of Researchers, Newsletters, etc, iw wonderful. We would love to connect with someone. Any information you could share would be very much appreciated. My E-mail address is BobAndVel@aol.com Thank you, Vel Weston

    3. Hello everybody, I was looking on the web site http://www.genealogy.org and found 1880 census. it is only 1 percent of the ferderal census but I did find several FERRIS' listed in there. Most of the FERRIS names were from New York, a couple from Ohio and 1 i think from Ky. If you get a chance check it out. As I said it is only 1 percent of the census but it does help a little!! 1. Re: [FARRIS-L] Wills of Alexander (1824) and James (1802)
    2. Hi Wilma! I am exhausted!!! Carole just left to drive home (she lives an hour from me). We have had two wonderful and productive days researching. We found a lot of info (barely scratched the surface) at the Delaware Historical Society. It is only 15 minutes from me, so I am hoping to return as often as I can. We are gathering info on all spellings of our name, many were used interchangeably. Our direct line is spelled FARIES. We believe there are connections to all the spellings of the surname. We have Faris/Faries/Faires/Ferris/Ferriss, etc. We have many different files that we believe will be connected at some point. Alexander, from Delaware into South Carolina, along with William and Robert and misc. others. We are also following the Zechariah Ferris (have just found info I believe brings Zechariah back one more generation to his father Samuel). Zechariah came from England to Connecticut, to Pennsylvania and finally to Delaware--the Wilmington area. We have tons of information on that family! We believe that there will be a connection at some point in these families. We will be doing other research trips and will keep digging!! Need to get some rest so we can hash out all this newfound info! Talk to you soon! Gail Faries

    3. Gail, thanks for the prompt reply! Can't believe that the info you gave me is the same James as the one whose estate was probated in 1778....too many years later. Yes, my James did have a son James, but this definitely isn't him; my James' son James was clear out in Missouri by this time. The James that I'm looking for was m. ca 1769, had three sons: John (my ancestor) b. 1770, Humphrey b. 1772, and James b. ca 1774. I don't know the location of any of these events; apparently James Sr. was a 'ramblin' man'. The tradition is that James Sr. was killed by Indians, and his widow Catherine remarried 1783-84. So his estate would have been probated in this period of time (1774-84). I don't think that he would have been alive too many years after the last child was born, or there would have been more children. Not only am I interested in identifying my own ancestor, but I'm trying to do a one-name study on the surname prior to 1800. What you're in the process of collecting, would be invaluable in my search to connect at least some of these "separate" lines. I hope that you're willing to help! 2. Hi Wilma! We are still collecting wills, but wanted to get back to you anyway. We have dividend records for the estate of James Faries from 12/15/1827 , 1/26/1828, and 4/11/1828, all of which interest is payable to widow, Martha, and children: Joseph, Sarah, Levi and James. Although the dates are later than yours, we wanted to get this off ASAP so you could compare the names, as this could be your James' s family or son. Do you recognize the names? Ours repeat over and over and over and over and over again. We have not even scratched the tip of the iceberg on the research at the Delaware Historical Society for this megafamily. We will be making further research trips, and we will look up--any questions from other cousins. Contact email addresses: Gail Faries damaris8@aol.com Carole Warner Faries itapa@enter.net Bye cuz! 2. Hi to all Faries/Ferris/Farris/Faris/and yes, you also Phariss! My cousin Gail Faries in De and myself in Penna. are researching what we think is "our" line of Faries here in this area. We are new to this mailing list, and have been really getting a wonderful response in the last week on the families of Faries. Gail and I have been researching in the Dover, DE archives and the DE Historical Society. We have not begun to do Philadelphia, Pa. and the surrounded suburbs. We also have kin from this line in Va, Md, and S.C. We have the will of Alexander Faries (Jennet Jemes-wife) and are pulling out our hair! Wells Alexander Faries from FARIES FUNERAL DIRECTORYS in DE gave me his line info. I have the hand written will of Alex who married Jannett. I have a statement of property ownership for Robert Faries, an Irishman, 1727, in Red Lion Hundred, Pencader, New Castle Co., DE. I have paperwork on Revolutionary boys in this line. Thanks to what Gail and I are reading this morning we will still have some hair left, because all these Williams, James, Johns, Samuels, Alexanders and the womens name a few of which are Mary and Ann seem to all be cousins who loved and respected each other so much they just kept using the same names.......so, now we who are huntin' them have skittles of the same name and it will be our job to connect "who's who" ! :) Thank you to all who have shared their information about Kin.... If we keep working we will have this cracked in no time.... Gail Faries and Carole Faries Werner
