I'm 28 & the last time I remember seeing or hearing about a census taker taking info. in my town/state (Idaho) I was probably around 7 yrs old. How do they go about doing it now? I heard they send a questionnaire out to you to fill out & send back, but I've never seen one either? No wonders we have so much problems finding out ancestor's thru census records LOL Alli ---------- > From: Dixie <dal@redoak.heartland.net> > To: FARRIS-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [FARRIS-L] Abt Modern Census's > Date: Sunday, February 07, 1999 5:08 AM > > I am 41 years old. I saw this in my paper today (The Cincinnati Enquirer) and thought it was well worth the mention... Nine years ago, the city of Cincinnati's population of 258,000 was underestimated by 3.1 percent. The reason I thought this was worth mentioning is because not only did the census takers of yesteryear not care but the people this day and age dont care. There are steps taken to ensure that this dont happen again but only because the city of Cincinnati losses billions of dollars in aids from the government but as long as these steps are taken we will soon have everyone available on the census. I just thought this was food for thought!! I will keep the whole story and if anyone would like it I will send it to you via email. Eleanor, I don't have any other information on William "Billy" Farris other than is approximate birthyear. I do know that most of his sons made it to Kentucky at some point in time, but I'm not sure if he traveled with them. It seems that most of his children settled in the Grayson County, and Edmonson County part of Kentucky. The only child that I have any real birth information on is Watson Farris born in Campbell County, Virginia and died in Sadler, Kentucky. I believe Sadler is in either Grayson or Edmonson County. The only child I have for John Farris is Mary Farris b.abt 1849. Like I said, I just got this information and am in the process of gathering proof of it all. It's difficult for me because we are living overseas, so everything has to be done by snail mail. Thomas Farris is where my line is at. I have got him listed in the 1860 Edmonson County census, but that's about it for now. I hope this help you out some. Let me know if there is anything I didn't answer for you. Ann Catherine Faris/Farris was born around 1810, and the Galveston, TX 1850 census states she was from or born in Kentucky . She married (first) George B. Mckinstry in 1832 in Brazoria county Texas. Stephen F. Austin died in their house. She married Greenberry Horus Harrison in Austin, Texas in 1841 after her first husband's death. Her only child was George B. Mckinstry Jr. She died in Harrodsburg, Kentucky in 1870 (on a trip to visit her neice), and her body was brought back to Galveston, Texas for burial next to her son. Services were at the Presbyterian church. Last Will and Testament of Ann C. Harrison, deceased. 1st Know all men by these Presents, That I, Ann C. Harrison, of the City and County of Galveston, and State of Texas, now being of sound mind, do make and declare this to be my last will and testiment. 1st I desire my Executor hereinafter mentioned to procure for my body a decent burial, by the side of my deceased son Geo. B. McKinstry, whether my own decease may occur in the State of Texas or elsewhere. 2nd I give and bequeath to my cousin Susan M. Lyne, widow of Daniel Lyne, lately deceased, five hundred acres of land. 3rd I give and bequeath unto my friend George W. Peete the sum of five hundred dollars. 4th I desire my executor, to sell the remainder of my estate both real and personal, and collect any debts and satisfying the bequests hereinbefore named, to pay over the balance if any unto the aforesaid Susan M. Lyne and to her son William Lyne (now her only child) share and share alike. 5th I hereby designate and appoint George W. Peete, of the City and County of Galveston and State of Texas, my lawful executor to carry out this my last will and testament, according to the true intent and meaning thereof. 6th I desire that my executor above named shall not be required or compelled to give bond and security for the honest execution of this my last will and testament, and that no other action shall be had in the county court, in relation to the settlement of my estate, than the Probation and Regtistration of this my will, and the return of an Inventory of my Estate, and that upon the occurrence of my death, this my will shall take effect, operate and be construed in accordance with the laws of the State of Texas. In witness whereof I have hereunto signed my name, and publish and declare this to be my last will and testament, at the City of Galveston, in the State of Texas, on this 1st day of April in the year Eighteen hundred and seventy. Ann C. Harrison In the City of Galveston, in the State of Texas, on the 1st day of April A. D. 1870, We the undersigned in the presence of Ann C. Harrison, and at her request, and in the presence of each other, have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses: W. F. Blunt L. E. Trezevant Obituary of Ann Catherine Farris/McKinstry/Harrison The friends of the deceased were painfully surprised by the arrival of the remains of Mrs. ANN C. HARRISON this morning, for internment, that lady having died at Harrodsburg, Ky., shortly after her arrival there from Galveston. She was among the very first settlers of Texas, coming to the then wilderness, in the flush and hope of early life, some forty years ago. She had passed through many vicissitudes, and survived her offspring and nearly all the friends of her early years; but she retained an abiding love for the country of her early adoption and left a request which has been nobly kept by her niece living in Kentucky that her remains may find their last rest in the land she had so long inhabited and loved with the devotion of a woman and almost that of a martyr-for she past through many perilous and trying scenes, without ever thinking of its abondonment. Many a needy and forlorn wanderer had had cause to be thankful for her kindness. She leaves many friends in Galveston where she has resided for many years past, and others, of longer standing, scattered through the State. The Galveston, Daily Civilian (April 30, 1870 pg 5, col 1 and 2) I am also looking for information on Ann Catherine's near relatives who came through Mississippi on the way to Brazoria county Texas...Willis A. Faris and Mrs. Eliza J. Faris. I think they are kin because: Willis A. and Eliza J. had adjoining land in Monroe county Mississippi before they came to Texas. They bought the land on the same day with sequential document numbers in 1825. Also: In 1841, Ann Catherine (Faris) Harrison and Mrs. Eliza J. Faris both from Brazoria assisted at the birth of the son of Anson Jones in Austin after Ann Catherine and her second husband Greenberry Horus Harrison were married. Willis A. Faris married Burnetta Whitesides in Hinds County Mississippi in Jan, 1834. He arrived in Brazoria county Texas Dec., 1834. He was a close associate of Ann Catherine's first husband George B. Mckinstry. For what it's worth, other surnames that were usually around these Farrises were Gill, Patton, Cooper, Collingsworth and Austin. Anyone out there have anything on this family? Stan Farris

Hi John Fariss: The children of Wm Faris and wife Martha Clardy have been all worked up and are in a file at the Franklin co Public Library there in Winchester, TN. I copied this material but the researcher name was not on the pages I copied. It appears that this couple had a Bible record: Wm Fariss Jr b Dec 23, 1788 in Pendelton Dist. SC md Oct 11, 1810 to Martha Clardy dau of Benjamin Clardy and Agnes Booth. Wm died Feb 7 1861 in Franklin co Tn Martha b Jun 16 1794 in Pendleton dist, SC died May 11, 1873 in Franklin co Tn children: Agnes Fariss b Nov 6 1811 Richard C. Fariss b Apr 11, 1814 Abram L. Fariss b July 7, 1816 Samuel C. Fariss b july 15 1819 Nancy Caroline Fariss b May 30, 1820 Samuel King Fariss b Sept 25, 1822 Mary Louisa Fariss b Jan 13, 1825 Harvey W. Fariss b Feb 14 1827 Edward Bryant Fariss b Jun 11 1829 Martha Melvina Fariss b Dec 28 1831 William Monroe Fariss b Apr 22 1834 Several of these folks have Coffee co Tn connections. This couple did not name a son James so I have ruled him out as being connected to my group of Farris. There is only about 4 or 5 separate Farris lines coming into Franklin co, Coffee co Tn area. You think you have had problems tracing the Farris line, then you need to talk with the folks who have been working in this part of Tn. Connie Lowe is part of this group. She is at ptp@lcc.net. Dear Mike, Do you know who James' father or grandfather was? My g-g-g-gf was WILLIAM FARISS/FARIS/FARRIS who died in Walker Co. GA in 1835. His eldest son, also WILLIAM, moved to TN, vicinity of Tullahoma (which is in or near Coffee Co), and married a Clardy. I am descended from WILLIAM Sr/'s youngest son, SAMUEL. As many of you are probably aware, Rootsweb offers the GenConnect Forums which are bulletin boards where you can place queries, obits, wills, and other information. I have not started one for the Farris surname primarily due to time constraints. I just wanted everyone to know that I would welcome anyone who wishes to host a GenConnect board for FARRIS. We could even move the "Farris Most Wanted" queries to that page as well as post the wills, obits, etc. I'm not sure how much work is involved on the part of the "owner" of one of these boards, but I don't think it's a great deal. Is anyone interested? I think you do have to be a Rootsweb sponsor at some level. If there is a volunteer out there, please let me know and I will get further information for you about what is involved and I would be happy to help where I can with the project.
