    1. [FARRIS-L] Letters of J.H.S. Faris 14 Feb 1919
    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. 14 Feb 1919: My fathers youngest brother Wm. Jasper Faris b. 1840 d. last Sunday. Also the dau. of my father's oldest 1/2 brother, Miles Faris b. 1809 and Mary Ann Hutchinson b. 1838. She said repeatedly that James and mary were 1st cousins. She was grown when they died and knew them intimately. Your James to S.C. -- from Va. as he claimed -- must have been as early as 1755 (see note). If true, one of very earliest settlers. The Waxhaws is recorded as having been the earliest settlement in upper S.C. in 1755. Charlotte, the oldest town -- 18 miles -- had only 20 houses in the Revolution. York -- 10 miles -- die not exist until 1782. (note: The first settlers in the Waxhaws of Lancaster County came in 1751. There is no land record there for a Faris.)

    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. 27 Sept 1916: Cousin Rev. J. Kelly Faris is 57. His grandfather was Thomas, brother of Mary who m. James 1768. J.K. remembered his father speaking of a Richard Faris who was butchered by Tories and left for dead, but lived to be old man. Says tradition in his family 2 brohters from Antrim Co., Ire. stopped short time in Delaware, but S.C. was their objective & that his father said all Faris here descended from these 2 brothers. His grfather Thomas had 2 uncles in Rev. - bachelors - buried Bethel Presby. Church c 10 miles from your gg grfather's home. We found: James Faires d. 1830 age 75 & john Faires d. 1825 age 83. These are brothers of my gr grandfather Alex. J.K. says a sister is buried at York and m. James B. Fulton. We found his grave, d. 26 Apr 1848, age 83.

    3. 17 July 1916: Cousin Rev. J.K. Faris of Ark. is planning a visit. His youngest sisters, Annie, visited in 1913. Their father left S.C. 1871 and went to near Little Rock. He was 1st cousin of my father and named Elija Alexander. Rev. D.C. Faris is evidently relative of our Farises but don't know connection. His father was b. c 30 miles from our people. One of his family kiilled in Rev. at Hanging Rock.

    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. 6 Dec 1913: My notes taken several years ago from my old cousin Wm. Choate - find a certain Mrs. Brown was niece of James Faris 1768. She was 1st cousin to the Halls. Am inclined to think one other sister of James 1768 m. Maj. Temple Hall. His wife was called Aunt Prudy. While the Halls & Faris do not claim relationship, have had people ask me if "Prudy" wasn't a Faris. (note: Claudia O'Driscoll names Prudence Patterson (1743-Aug 15, 1839) as the wife of John Hall (1736 - Mar 1, 1784) and Elizabeth Gillespie (?) (1788 - Jan 13, 1847) as the wife of Major Temple Hall (Sept 21, 1781- Jun 17, 1857)

    3. 18 Dec 1912: As to 1790 census, "The Jno Ferris of Chester Co. is the one buried at Ebenezer & who I thought your gg (g?) grand father as the name is exactly as on tomb stone". Chester line is c 10-12 miles from Ebenezer and there are records in Columbia of land granted to Wm. Faris as Chester as early as 1764.

    1. [FARRIS-L] Letters of J.H.S. Faris 10 Feb 1912
    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. 10 Feb 1912: There were Faris' across the river that were related to our people - - the family being extinct now - and they were closely related to Aunt Hattie Sturgis. She knew some of them, but not the relationship. My 1st cousin has spoken to me about this family and siad there were two Alexanders and to distinguish one of was known as "Black Alex."

    1. [FARRIS-L] Letters of J.H.S. Faris 4 Aug. 1911
    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. 4 Aug 1911: I forgot to mention that W.O.Y. said that the James who visited from Mo. stammered. Old cousin Hettie Sturgis age 79 said her father was Alex Strain and "He mother" was a Faris, but could not tell me the relation to my grfather, but that they were very closely related. Aunt Hettie is the 2nd wife & widow of her sister Sallie's husband.

    1. [FARRIS-L] Letters of J.H.S. Faris 10 Feb 1911
    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. 10 Feb 1911 ..... a section of county extending along river for 6-7 miles has been owned principally by the Faris or descendants as far back as I can trace. Your Alex must have lived in this same section. Long John Faris is only one of the older ones that raised his family elsewhere. His home was down-river ca 10 miles below Rock Hill and our neighborhood is from 5-10 mies above RH. Yes, I know old Aunt Hattie Sturges was a Strain. She had a sister Sallie. She is quite old now & not mentally able to give info. I have learned the home of the old Strain families was only c 2 miles from old home of James Faris b. 1768. There are no Strains here now and few descendants. No, James 1768 father was not named Alex, but my gr grfather Alex b. 1750 was James 1768 Uncle. James m. Mary Faris Dinsmore, widowed dau. of Alex. 1750 & sister of my grfather. By Dinsmore she had one dau, Dorcas, who m. James Carothers. Dorcas & James were parents of Harriet who m. "Long John" A. Faris, father of Tirzah Fewell. Mary then m. her 1st cousin James Faris & had one dau. Mary, who m. Wm. Youngblood and had Wm. O. & Dorcas, who m. Steven Huddleston. I don't think it would be possible to locate the site of the gin your gr grfather owned as you say it was burned in 1822 . . . my old uncle Samuel Dinsmore Faris 1818-1909. My father's oldest 1/2 brother was Miles Faris b. 1805 & lived to be over 90. 5 graves in cemetery at Ebenezer 3 miles NW of Rock Hill spelled Ferris. Never able to find who they were. John Ferris d. 1 Feb 1804 age 74 Ann Ferris d. 7 June 1803 age 95 Mary Alexander d. ____ 1800 age 72 Ester Ferris d. 14 Nov 1795 age 10 Rachel Ferris d. 15 Nov 1795 age 2 Mrs. Fewell's father's home was in Catawba Twp but think he was raised farther up the river near where the So. R. Road crosses the river. My sister Lillian lives in Columbia & examined all the old records with the assistance of the Sec. of State, but found nothing of any help to us. Wm. O. Youngblood says he & brothers & sisters were orphaned when he was 11 in 1844 & he and 1 sister lived with grparents James and Mary Faris. James d. 28 Oct 1850. Mary d. 24 Sept 1853. Says James was living on same plantation where he was born, having come in possession of our gr grfather's father's old home where he 1st settled when he came to SC. James erected another house for himself. The old home had been destroyed in some way at that time. He told me I would find the old cellar of the original house c 150 yards fr ma spring -- which I did. It is c 200 yds from the river on west bank c 1 miles above Alison Crk. Now owned by So. Power Co. . . . nothing but barren washed-away hill with only old cellar and a few fruit trees, brick bats & crockery pieces . . . He said James' 1768 father was either James or John and he thought James. Said his grmother had told him that James' 1768 father was a weavfer and wove cloth for the public & that he would weave meal sacks for himself he would always weave in different colors hi initials IF in the sacks & that old Aunt Mary always told him that in those days I stood for J. He (Wm. O.) gave me an old spoon that had been made in a pair of his gr grfather's spoon moulds & on it are the initials IF. He thought James had a brother Alex. & well remembered that he would get letters from relatives in the west. He remembered that James 1768 had a bachelor nephew who lived in Mo. near the Miss. River who visited him. He took Long John Faris back with him & tried to induce him to make his home there. He said James 1768 and his wife were 1st cousins. Wm. Carothers has old paper handed down for several generations stating the families of Carothers, Faris, Neely, Miller & Dinsmore all settled in York Co. 1750 and came from York, Lancaster & Union Cos. Penn. It was not signed, but probably true. W.O.Y. also said James 1768 had the original title from King George and that the place was not included in the Catawba Indian reservation as I had thought. I am inclined to believe John Ferris buried Ebenezer was your gr gr (gr?) grfather.

    1. [FARRIS-L] Letters of J.H.S. Faris
    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. These letters were published in the June, 1999 issue of "The Quarterly", a publication of York County Genealogical and Historical Society". I have received permission from Louise Pettus, the editor of this publication to share this information with the Farris-L. If anyone is interested in joining this organization, membership is $20 per year, due on June 1. "The Quarterly" is published quarterly and is a fine publication for anyone researching families of the York County, SC area. York County Genealogical and Historical Society PO Box 3061 CRS Rock Hill, SC 29732 Since this will be a long post, I will probably split it up into sections and post as I can. The individual who abstracted this information and shared with the Society was Betty Givens Moore. She would like to exchange information with other Faris researchers. Her address is 226 Woodland Hills Dr., Oxford, MS 38655. _________________________________________ Letters of J.H.S. Faris, abstracted by Betty Givens Moore 29 Jan 1910. Your bible records give one James Faris b. 11 Aug 1768. I had a great Aunt Mary Farris who m. her 1st cousin, James Faris. According to his tombstone he was b. 14 Aug. 1768. He and aunt Mary lived to be very old. Have been working on Faris for 10 yrs & have found several different sects located in different states and nearly every one trace their ancestors back to Va. My gr. grfather Alexander Faires was b. 1750 Ireland, afterwards settled in Penn. During the Rev. War he wrote to his relatives in York Co., SC & finding the British had not been in that section, moved by wagon in 1778 with wife Janette & children. Their dau. Mary & husband James Faris had but one dau. who m. a Youngblood. Samuel Faris was my grfather and John Faris was grfather of Tirzah Faris Fewell to whom you wrote. There were also Thomas, Jessee & Ann.

    1. Re: [FARRIS-L] Coats of Arm
    2. Wanda Rabb
    3. Just a word of caution on coat of arms....it's my understanding that the original coat of arms that families had were unique to that FAMILY - not the surname. Therefore, I am not certain that the coat of arms that is displayed on my site IS THE coat of arm for Farris. It may be one that was used by a Farris family at some point, but we certainly do not have the history or explanation of the meaning of this coat of arms. Having said that, I still wanted whatever existed for the Farris surname! If they cant send it in regular >email. I trash them. > >Hope Farris > > This virus is the one that can be passed along by someone completely UNKNOWINGLY, so don't necessarily blame the sender. Here is some information that was posted recently on the Listowners list regarding this virus (it has made the rounds on the Rootsweb lists). HAPPY99CLEANER 2.0 File size: 716K License: freeware Minimum requirements: Windows 95/98/NT There's a pesky little virus going around the Net these days called Happy99.exe. It doesn't damage your system or corrupt any data, but it can spread like wildfire if unchecked because it attaches itself to every email you send and every newsgroup message you post. Happy99Cleaner won't protect you from the virus, but it can get rid of it if you've been infected. After you clean out your system, you can check the LISTE.SKA file to see a list of email addresses you have sent the virus to and start writing those apologies. Get ready to be happy: http://www.download.com/DD/dl/0,302,0-0309-1-017,00.html ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ There is a new virus spreading around the Internet. It is most commonly called "Happy99." It first started showing up in January 1999. Normally, it arrives as a file named "Happy99.exe" attached to an e-mail, or it is downloaded from a news group. When first executed, this program displays fireworks on the user's screen while it deploys its payload. SO FAR NO DESTRUCTIVE PAYLOAD HAS BEEN FOUND. What the virus does is copy itself into the \windows\system directory where it copies and modifies a windows file called wsock32.dll. This allows it to attach itself to all outgoing e-mail and news group posts. It will even compile a list of addresses that it will spam from your e-mail in a file called "liste.ska." WHAT TO DO... If you receive this file via e-mail or news group, delete it immediately. If you have already opened the file and seen the "Happy 1999" and fireworks, you have already been infected. If you received the virus on your home computer, or you are just not sure, finding and removal instructions are provided below by Otis Waskey. Antivirus software? So far the software manufacturers are slow adding the recognition of this virus to their products. Until then, we will have to remove it ourselves. Instructions for finding and removing of Happy99 virus. 1. Using the Find Files utility on the Start button menu, do a search for the file extension "*.SKA" on your computer and you'll find 4 files in the \windows\system directory: SKA.EXE, SKA.DLL, LISTE.SKA and WSOCK32.SKA. 2. Delete the first 3 (SKA.EXE, SKA.DLL, LISTE.SKA) DO NOT DELETE WSOCK32.SKA. 3. Restart PC in DOS mode. 4. Go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (cd\windows\system). 5. Delete WSOCK32.DLL (del wsock32.dll) 6. Rename WSOCK32.SKA to WSOCK32.DLL (ren wsock32.ska wsock32.dll). 7. Reboot your system.

    1. [FARRIS-L] Thank you, Wanda
    2. Thank you Wanda for making the UNKNOWINGLY part of the virus spread known. My cousin, Johnny Jackson, has been seriously researching our family for over 7 years and would be devastated if he thought he had hurt anyone. He had no idea that he had downloaded the virus until Hope Farris brought this to his attention. Luckily, he had not sent out too many emails in that time (2 days) and has been able to contact those folks (many of whom were not as nice as Hope and just ignored the download without telling him of the problem). So thanks again, Wanda Debi Brimmer
