I can be reached at: BETSYFARIS@aol.com Today is Wednesday, June 23, 1999 James Samuel Hampton Faires\ Faris is the father of Cynthia Catherine Faris. {1.} Alexander b. @ 1740 d. June 6, 1824, {2.} Samuel Faires b. March 4, 1780, d. February 23, 1852, {3.} Elias Newton Faires\Faris b. April 23, 1830, d. March 18, 1902, {4.} James Samuel Hampton Faris b. February 9, 1876, d. April 7, 1928, and {5.} Cynthia Catherine Faris {still living a couple of months ago when I last talked with her}. William Wilson Faires is the father of William Howard Faires, Sr., m. Louise. {1.} Alexander b. @ 1740 d. June 6, 1824, {2.} Jesse Faires b. 1787 d. April 21, 1845, {3.} Elias Monroe Faires b. August 15, 1814, d. August 15, 1893, {4.} William Wilson Faires b. November 2, 1877, d. February 18, 1960, and {5.} William Howard Faires, Sr. b. June 28, 1915, d. 199_ m. Carrie Louise Kerr {{goes by Louise}}. Since these two people {Cynthia and Louise in this case} and their parents are a lot closer to Alexander b. @ 1740 than I am I do honestly believe that they know who their direct ancestors are and who the descendants of their direct ancestors are. As you may have noticed James Samuel Hampton was very much into genealogy and did quite well considering the conditions he had to work with at that time period. Roads were of dirt and poorly maintained. He had to work to support his family and couldn't go to historical societies and so forth for a lot of info. He did lots of personal interviews where he took notes and wrote lots of letters to folks across the country. Cynthia and one of her brothers took up where he left off. Louise still works on genealogy as time permits.
I am also huntin for Alexander Faries. My problem is that Alexander married Jannet James in Delaware and then it seems.....moved south. So our line might come off there, and then again it might not! It is heartbreaking as we were thinking we almost has this licked. Now we have to sit back and wait, and do much more research on the Delaware lines....... Our Alexander has a son, Alexander. He also had at least one grandson Alex (in the will) and there is a whole line from an Alexander here in Delaware that has been in furniture making then funeral home business....who have eluded to relatives down south. (South Carolina and Tennessee) We will need to plan a trip to talk to some kin, as my cousin Gail and I are trying to find out "link". August might just be the target date for now, as I am bogged down with court issues with my children and grandchildren. Continue to monitor this site....see what is current to add to my clues. I just discovered that my gggggmother Mary (1780-1850), wife of William McCrosky (1772-1855), was married to him in 1803 in Fleming co, Ky, as Mary FARRIS. An 1850 census record indicates that Mary was b. in Va. Does anyone have information on Fleming co. Farrises, or on births in Va., that might help identify Mary's parents? Thanks much. I also have an ALEXANDER FARIS who was b. SC, m. Mary Faris (cousin) in Maury Co., TN on Aug. 21, 1821. (married by Hugh Douglas). Mary "Polly" Faris b. SC abt 1794 d. Tishomingo Co., MS Nov. 4, 1851. Children: Isaac M.A. Faris b. TN Apr 5, 1827 d. March 6, 1869 Tishomingo Co., MS. Charles Henry Ferris b. Aug. 1829 d. March 21, 1902 Prentiss Co., MS. Rhoda Faris b. abt 1825 John P. Faris b. KY, abt 1833 (Probably other children prior to 1827) Alexander Faris does not appear on or after the 1850 census with this family. He may have died young. This family was associated with the WHITESIDE and WILEY families. Rhoda Feris Whiteside (Mrs. Robert), b. SC Nov. 27, 1788 is the Aunt of my ancestor Charles Henry Ferris/Faris (son of Alexander and Mary "Polly" Faris). Any information would be appreciated. Dee Feris Self
Searching for any information regarding an Alexander Farris who married Emeline P. Todd on Jan. 10, 1856 in Owen County, Indiana. Parents of Emeline were T.J. and Mary Todd. Thanks.
With all the discussion about the Alexander FARISes, I thought I'd post my names again. Leah Faris is listed on the 1850 census of Calloway County, KY as having been born in SC. She married Andrew Alexander in Maury County, TN 29 Apr 1819. She is included in her father's will signed 9 May 1820 in Maury Co. Her father is Alexander Faris; wife of Alexander is Elizabeth, but she may be a second wife. All children listed in the will are: Thomas C., Moses A., Mary Ann Walker, Sarah Kirk, John, Adam, Alexander, Caleb, Leah Alexander, Mary A., and Rody E. Executors: wife Elizabeth, son Alexander and neighbor Hugh Douglas. Witnesses: John __________, Daniel McKennon and Edward McFadden, Jr. Does anyone have a complete copy of the will? All I have is an abstract. I know about all those Farris, Farriss, etc. families in Maury County, but have never been able to connect with them. Susan Hurt thurt@redrock.net

Betsy, The Faries family in SC originates from James Faries (ca 1738-1802) and Jean Adair d. 1807. James was the son of William Faries d.1786 DE. James Faries had a son Alexander b. 1758 who married Elizabeth Strain (Strane). The other Faries Family of SC was Alexander Faries Jr. (1740-1824) and Jennet James. James Faries (1802) and Alexander Faries Jr. (1824) were probably first cousins. From records in DE. it seems their fathers probably were brothers. If you look at the wills of James 1802 and Alexander 1824 in SC you will find the names of their children are almost the same. This is true of all the Faries families originating from Robert Faries d. 1749 DE. Rev Daniel Cargill (D. C.) Faris born 21 Jun 1843 near Bloomington IN was a brother of my grandfather, Rev Isaiah Faris. Their father was James Faris, born15 May 1791 on Rocky Creek, Chester District, S. Car. Their mother was Mary Ann Beckett. This family is discussed in the book : "The Faris Family of Bloomington, IN" by David Faris,1989, Gateway Press, Baltimore. If there is a connection between this family and the family discussed in the email titled [FARRIS-L] Letters of J.H.S. Faris 17 July 1916, I am not aware of it. James Hampton Samuel Faris, B 1877 D 1928, Rock Hill, SC . Betsy Faris also included many of them in her book, THE FAMILY OF JAMES FAIRES. We are aware that there are some errors in the letters. Sylvia Rhodes
OK....after posting all those letters last night.....we need to know WHO this J.H.S. Faris was. Does anyone know what the initials stand for? Thanks, Wanda
11 Oct 1925: >From old land records I learn that there were two John Farises here -- a John, Sr. and a surveyor. Also that Alexander (1750?) settled on - or probably so - the land earlier occupied by John Sr. It was surveyed by the other John. ______________ This concludes the letters of J.H.S. Faris as published in "The Quarterly", June, 1999.
25 Aug 1924: Your James served on first County Court Jury in York in 1787. He was a professional weaver and confined his art to the finer grades of woolen and other materials commonly used in his time. Also John Feris was on same jury. I think this John was brother to James and the father of my gr grandfather Alex. 1750.
