We are working on the line of Robert Faries, an Irishman, 1727 who owned land in New Castle Co. Red Lion Hundred. His family seems to have been large, and migrated down to Smyrna and Dover DE area (where my GGGrandfather's family was) and it is rumored they came down from Conn., as part of the original settlers who came in there. What I do is take notes, or photocopy any information I find in my travels of research. I began taking evrything down when I started, as I didn't know who went with who, and as time is moving on, there are connections being made with other people out there who have kin from this main branch in New Castle. Steve Wheeler is in Colorado, and one of the boys of Robert, we think William, took his son from New Castle DE to Ohio and on from there. Steve is married to Diane Faries of that line. Steve has been working very hard on the tax records and census. Gail and I are working on tax records also, backfilling what we need. We also have many wills, that we got from the Dover Archives. I sat and wrote down every name in the card files, for Faries (sp) that pertained to vital records. We found a connection with Warren (Baton Rouge, La) as his GGGranfather Samuel was a brother to my GGGrandfather Alfred. We have met his family in Dover and Cheswold DE, and they are the sweetest people. We hope to pull from the main files, and seperate the family line for Samuel and his wife Margaret Burgin. We also have a good clue as to Samuel's parents and Grandparents and have to continue to research and verify that information. That would jump us back to GGGGGrandparents....all of whom seem to come from the New Castle Co. lines. I have been working for about 7 years with the line of Alexander Faries from the Faries Funeral Home (7th generation in that business) and have extensive history on that line of Alexander. Lex, just passed last July, so Gail and I will need to sit with his wife Nancy and see what she has on the South Carolina and Tenn lines. My family (GGGrandparents, and GGrandparents) are buried in Odd Fellows Cemetery in Smyrna, DE. This family settled there and stayed there for several generations and there is a treasure trove of information there on them also. I have a packette out to the cemetery to get information from the records on file. (there are many names in that immediate family) Steve Wheeler, had someone who moved to California, send me census that showed my connection of Alfred and Samuel, but we didn't connect it until Warren did and located us via the internet. There is a Betsy Faris who lives in Mo. she has this family also when they moved out of DE. It is the same family of Alexander who married Jannett James in 1765 in DE, and moved to South Carolina and died there. She claims that Alexander left town, and we are not going in the right direction, but we have many Alexanders buried right there in Smyrna, DE who are coming off that line. There is so much more that we need to research. We haven't gotten into the Wilmington Courthouse as of yet! So much to do, and so little time. I was thinking that surely everyone else is doing as we are....gathering with the hope of connection in the future. If each of us took the states of availability and combined and shared our information, we could really hit pay dirt with this group. I also have census from Ireland on Ferris (sp) and they did come in here from Ireland. I have a file chuck full of sea captains, that came in and out of Philly ports and down the southern coast. There was a treasure trove of military records for this family from New Castle also...from King George's war forward....they were very active in the wars. I have been trying to gather history of the areas, old maps, and information that can let us know how they lived, and more clues. Gail and I have found obits which are very valuable (1800's) to family lines. We have found info in newspaper articles about different family members and the things they did, and comings and goings. I have entered all in Word 97, in main and sub files, with bold and other indicators to highlite who is who, and important information about them. This Ziba Ferris line is hooked in also, we just have not found the connections. That is why I tend to lean to, if everyone is gathering as we are, and trying to connect.....and we all have the same master information to pull from....look at the possibilities that could occur. If we could all work together for the coommon goal of the mail links, and help each other research in our states of availability we could find out roots so very much faster. I am not in this for "glory" or to write a book and make money! I am in this to find my family of origin, and put it down for the generations that come after me....that is my goal. I am not in this to be "RIGHT" and prove others wrong. I am here to help and hopefully find others who are willing to help by sharing information to the common goals. Someday, God willing, I hope to walk the lands of my ancestors in Ireland and Scotland, and see where I began. I know there is much more research ahead, but for all of us to be struggling when we can help each other find the way, seems senseless to me at best. Sincerely Carole Faries Werner
Wanda, This file is VERY large, and growing all the time. I have been gathering everything I can find on the name Ferris (sp) for almost 8 years now. Because I had such a large family, and no knowledge of the "proper" way to do geneaology work, I was like a squirrel gathering nutts! Anything that I could find, I took notes on, and referenced. I have every birth, baptismal, marriage and death (with reference numbers) for the Dover Archives, as well as history on "our" churches; areas "we" lived in; history of the cemeteries "we" are buried in; military information about any Faries I could find, files on Lex's family (He came outta a large family in New Castle DE) which I still know in my heart is part of ours; and when Gail came on board, she did the same....EVERYTHING we found we made note of. Ruling nothing out, as a possibility. In laws are there, as well as friends. We do a lot of cross referencing, to get to our goals. If someone needed information from Dover Archives, they would have reference numbers to e mail, Dover would send a price for info, they could send a check and the info would be in their hands within days. That is why I copy all resources and reference numbers, so if I leave the area, I can call, write or email later for something to fill in the gap. Gail is on AOL, so there might be a way we can send this through her. Meanwhile, if someone has questions on the DE area they can ask us, and we can see if we have it on file. I still think it would be less stressful to just have everyone on the same page. If someone has information on another state, and that links us (like South Carolina and Tenn) then the puzzle will drop in place much much faster for all of us. Let's see how we can share this information. There must be a way to get this out there. I know very little about computers, haven't even got me a home page yet. So, maybe someone else out there can come up with the idea that will bring this all together for all of us. Thanks for your reply, I remain sincerely Carole Faries Werner, and Gail Faries says me too!
Wanda, I have been entering all my notes on all my gatherings of any name of Faries (sp) in my Word 97 files. I have vital records, births, baptismals, marriages, deaths, military, city directory info, I can go on and on. I am gathering Faries (sp) where-ever I find it...and have a very large master list. I was hoping that if I circulate it on the site, then all of these people who are huntin for kin, will be able to seperate and pull out what does or might apply to them. That way they can help us get all the family groups organized. Gail and I have a lot of DE information. We are just starting to get into Pa. research.....which will be more of a fall thing. I take down anything at this time, as I have found that sooner or later it connects somewhere. Steve and now, Warren are on board and they are doing pretty much the same thing...and we are trying to share with each other what we have so far. There are several others helping us from within the group. Here is the problem: I have entered the information much the same way as I did the last posting, with bold, underline, etc. where I feel it is important to draw attention to the subject at hand. This will not post on the net, as I just found out. It is important to do this, as without the proper notice...the postings will be confusing. Do you have any suggestions as to how to by pass this? I am also on a different carrier, as we dumped AOL years ago due to the problems and the high bills it was creating for us. We are on a local service, which does us just fine. My only other alternative would be to mail you (snail mail) a master dics (or however many it takes) and let you review the information and possible format for you to post it on the site. It would be nice if all of us are on the same page, and would save a lot of time and energy if we all had information on a master list. I would hope that others from different states, who have their beginnings in Conn. or DE would post the gatherings they have. It seems that "our" DE group did have several who left New Castle Co. and went down Dover way. Then this same group branched out from there to South Carolina and Tenn. as well as other states. More and more the evidence links back to the large family from New Castle DE, who originated in the Conn. lines years before. The Ferris spelling also seems to be the one that started here, and was distorted along the way. Faries was also listed as a different version of the spelling. I am willing to share whatever I have, and I will wait to see what your ideas might be, so that this group can all have the same research information available to them. I have a strong feeling that they have a lot to contribute of their own lines, and something could trigger a major clue or link to get us all together as kin. My main objective is to find my beginnings and the folks who belonged in my lines. I would rather not be spinning my wheels at this point, but be moving in a positive direction to connections. I am doing both sides of my mother and father's lines and this is a major project for me, as well as for Gail. I can speak for both of us, that we are willing to share anything we have to the common goal of connections. New people come in and others drop out, old postings are lost to them. I am fairly new to this, and although I keep all the mailings in a seperate file, it is very large and involved and difficult to go back and look for people. I will wait to hear what your thoughts are on this, or the thoughts of the group at large. Sincerely in kinship Carole Faries Werner

Wanda, Did the info come out clear when it was forwarded and resent. I still don't know what an url and mimi is...sorry. Gail got hers just fine, so I have no idea what is going on. I know I tried to copy it as in the book, and made things stand out, maybe that is what messed it up. I think it is info worth musing. It certainly made me spin around a few times...Fergus....I found it very interesting indeed. Carole Faries Werner

Book: Irish Families by Edward Maclysaght Surnames indigenous and common in Britain which are used as the Anglicized forms of Gaelic Irish Surnames: Ferris (Fergus) Gaelic Irish surnames which have an English appearance but are nevertheless rarely if ever found indigenous in Britain: Ferris Book: The Surnames of Scotland by Black (New York Public Library) FERRES, FERRIES, FERRIS. From (Mac) Ferries or simply a corruption of Fergus. Old (17th Century) spellings are: Feres, Ferres, Phires, Pheres, and Ferries. By local usage in Aberdeenshire Ferris is a contraction of Ferguson (Rev A.B. Grosart) Ferries also occurs as a diminutive of Farquharson. MACFERRIES. MacFhearghuis (Fear'uis) 'son of Fergus'; Andreas McFeris, one of the king's tenants in Crethnard, Strathdee, 1527- 39. Patrick McFers, tenant in Easter Micras (Estir Mecra) 1539. Katherine M'Ferries, who was accused of witchcraft in Aberdeen, 1597, also appears in record without 'Mac'. Thomas McPhereis in Crathinhard is mentioned in 1603, and John Bane McPhires in the same place 1643. The name also occurs in seventeenth century records as M'Pheires, Feres, Phires, Ferries, Pheres. FARRIE, Farries-From Ireland o'Fearghuis, 'decendant of Fergus'. Local diminutives of Fergusion. Robert Farries in Newbigging, 1648. Agnes Faries was examined for the Test in Tinwald, 1685. William Fairries, late merchant burgess, 1729. Eleven of the name are recorded in Dumfries Commissariot Record between 1624 and 1800. FERGUS Fearghus, Feargus, Fergus, oIr. Fergus (grandfather of S. Columba) The name is cognate with Cymric Gwr-gwst, Old Bret. Uuorgost, and Pictish Forcus. The Pictish form is also found on the inscribed monument at St. Vigeans in Angus, and the writer of the unique Gaelic charter of 1408 writes it Fercos. In the list of Pictish kings it is also written Urguist, Wirguist, and Wrguist. It means "super choice" from Ver-gustu-s, the suffix being the same as in the personal name Angus. It is now rare as a surname having been corrupted to Ferries, etc. James Fergus, burgess of Culross 1582. See MacFerries and Mackerras. Question: Will we ever really know how to spell the name properly. Hopefully we will be able to track back to the origin someday. Fergus is cool.....and not that hard to misspell..:} Hope you find this of interest Carole Faries Werner
