Does anyone have data regarding the Faris family of Berkeley co, Virginia (later West Virginia)? I have three probable brothers named James (ca 1751?-1822), John (1761-1826), and William (ca 1765?-1803), all of whom wound up in Fleming co, Ky. John appears to have m. 1794 in Berkeley co. to Eleanor Belt. Any help would be much appreciated. David Boles

Substitute the name Riggins for Farris and I agree.Maryellen
Dont all of you wonder if there was a great conspiracy at the turn of nineteenth century? All of the FARRISes from the South decided that every family would have at least one George Washington FARRIS in every generation. All FARRISes would intermarry with THOMPSONs and JOHNSONs. When they got to Indiana and Illinois they would scatter into diverse counties choosing at least one that would have one or more courthouse fires. They would not be content to stay in one place travelling regularly between IN, IL, MO, AR and KY before sending future generations to TX and OK. I just dont see it any other way. Anyway here is my revised FARRIS line: George Washington FARRIS b. 1811/1812 KY married (first) S (initial only on the 1850 census) abt 1835 (probably in IN since his first child was born there) J. male b. abt 1836 E. female b. abt 1837 Jasper male b. abt 1838 M. male b. abt 1839 H. male b. abt 1840 P. female b. abt 1844 I cannot find this GW on the 1860 census so his wife may have been dead by then and all of his children were old enough to be gone. In 1864 GW married Sarah E. JOHNSON WILLIAMS (daughter of Arthut Lewis JOHNSON) in Gibson Co. IN These JOHNSONs were back and forth between White Co. IL and Posey and Gibson Cos. IN They had the following children: (William) Thompson Rosetta John Lewis Martha Elizabeth (Mattie) Spicey Endia Sarah died (in childbirth with Spicey ?)in 1873 George W. took the children and ended up in Montague Co. TX by 1878 possibly via Arkansas. He is on the 1880 census in Jack Co. TX and he died shortly after. It is unlikely that a sixty year old man would take five children including a baby to some distant place without family there or some purpose. It is extremely probable that Thompson FARRIS b. 1809 KY and living in Hamilton Co. IL was his brother. He was there from the early 1830s through the 1870 census. His wife and children were: Julie (Juda) WEBB m. abt 1832 Henry W. b. abt 1833 IN - all the rest were born in Hamilton Co. IL William George Washington b. abt 1836 Sarah Permelia Naomi Jane (married Robert LYNN) Samuel Slocum b. abt 1842 Martin Webb b. abt 1844 Greenville Robert b. abt 1848 I think that there is a great likely-hood that these two are cousins to: Samuel Shelton, James B. , Elizabeth etc the children of George Washington and Nancy SHELTON FARRIS of KY which would make them the children of either John and Mary SHELTON FARRIS or Major and Nancy HUNGATE FARRIS. I hope someone is working on these same two FARRISes or has information on the above mentioned brothers John and Major that would help. Charmaine Riley Holley arkivemom@aol.com

Greetings to all: I am new to the list and have just stumbled onto a family connection to the Farris name, I think. I was looking for my great grandfather, Robert Myers; I found him as a 13 yr old living with his mother, older brother and a younger sister. His mother had remarried (I suppose) to a Gills and they were living in Obion County, TN in the 1870 Census. The whole family was living with W. W. FARRIS 60 yrs old, born in Virginia. Robert Myers' mother, Mary J. age 33, also was born in VA. Her 2 sons were born in Texas, William H. Myers age 15, and Robert age 13, but her daughter Nancy A. Myers age 10 was born in Tennessee in 1860. The Myers children's father was born in KY. THEREFORE, I have assumed the following: W. W. Farris had a daughter Mary J. born abt 1836/37 in Virginia. They may have moved to KY where she met and married a Myers abt 1852/53. Mary J. and her husband then moved to Texas and had 2 sons there. She had her daughter in 1860 in TN. I don't know what happened to her husband. Mary J. then married John Gills and their children are John A. born abt 1862, Mary J. born abt 1868, and Roberta born abt 1878. Does anyone out there have any information on W. W. Farris and his daughter Mary J.? Such as mother, siblings, the Myers she married and when, etc.? I will be sooooooo grateful for any assistance. Thanks. I am originally from West Tennessee and now live near St. Louis, MO. Diane Gunter Borgman
I don't know if it is my John Farris to whom you refer, but I do not know his parents at all. He was born in Ky in 1815. Eleanor

Yes, he did live in Schuyler Co., Missouri! I was not sure what his parents names were or if he was born in Schuyler Co. MO. I have just started looking so I am realizing there seems to be alot of Farris's in the MO area. I got some recent information that may be helpful. It's listed below: There is a 4 year-old "Dudley", born in MO, living in Independence Twp., with parents A.D. & Sarah Faris, siblings - Martha, John D., Mary J., & Emeline. Both parents are born in KY. In the 1850, 1860 Census.. Seems there may be more information. I need to look into this some more. I will keep in touch. I am trying to help another person with her Faris-Farris line out of York. She descends from Tirzah Clarke Faris who married Thomas McGill Boyd. In looking at my records, I noticed I also have one of TIrzah's sisters Martha M. Faris married to a Thomas M. Boyd. Were both of these sisters married to Thomas McGill Boyd or do I have some erroneous information here? Thanks, Wanda
Wanda, The only Martha Farris (Mattie) I have married a Hinton and I don't show any Tirzah at this point. Eleanor
