I am tied to both t he Gannt and Faires names. As you can tell, both names are spelled different from yours but wonder if we are connected somewhere down the line. My GGG Grandmother was Jean Faires b. 1765 to James Faires and Jean Adair in York Co. SC. Jean Faires also became an Adair when she married my GGG Grandfather, John Adair. My G Grandmother was named Frances Gannt. She married Andrew Jackson Adair in Marshall Co. MS in 1857. Contact me if we have connections. His estate was probated 7 March 1771 in Frederick Co, and his wife, Isabella, outlived him. Among his children were two sons mentioned as Administrators of his Estate: John Faris and Thomas Faris. Now I don't know anything about Thomas yet, but John continued to live in Frederick Co near Emmitsburg, was in the Rev. War and is buried in the Presbyterian Cemetery (the old one) near Emmitsburg. John was b 1744 and died 1832. I havn't gotten John Faris' will yet, but am going to Frederick Co soon and will get a copy (or in Annapolis), so I don't know the names of his children - I do know who he married. I am interested in whatever you have discovered about Joseph Faris - I have quite a bit on him and his other children. Can we exchange? Marlene Marlene DiGiovanni MarleneDiGi@prodigy.net

Please unscribe my name from this mailing list, I am changing servers . Thank you
Am new to this list, but I am probably not the first to ask about the following: Ancestry of Mary(Faris)Neely, b. 17 Jan 1820 Hagerstown, MD, dau. of Wm Faris and Jane(Ross)Faris. Mary married James White Neely in 1838 in Maury Co. TN and d. in 1877-8 in Jonesboro, Union Co. IL. Mary had the following siblings: Robert L, Betsey, Mary, James Ross, Jefferson, William, John B., & David(possibly others?). According to the research of others, all of these children were b. in or near Hagerstown, MD. Have speculated that Wm Faris Sr. may have been the son or grandson of a Joseph Faris of either Frederick or Washington Cos. MD, and that Jane Ross may have been the dau. of a John Ross(who may have come from Lancaster PA to MD). I sure would like to talk to anyone who has Faris/Farris lines in this part of MD. - ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Larry D. Hamilton Coats P.O. Hi Patty, In a book I have written by Betsy Farris I found the following: DAR Patriot Index --- Centennial Edition Page 987 Part 1 Faris: Faires, Fairis, Farish, Farris William: b. 1748 PA. d. 7-16-1798 PA. m. Ann Biddle 2Lt. Matr. PA I copied this word-for-word. Sorry I do not know wat 2Lt. Matr. PA means. This is the only time the name Biddle is mentioned in the book. Rick, Thanks Rick, you are a doll. I'll write my letter today to Mrs. Kitson. Happy hunting! Remember, you ancestors are just dying to have you did them up. Claudetta
Claudetta, My experience has been that there were three distinctly different branches of the Ferris family that arrived in the American colonies prior to 1650. The first was Richard Ferris who was in Henrico Co., VA by 1610. Jeffrey Ferris arrived second, made a Freeman in 1635 at Boston and moved on to CT. Zachariah Ferriss arrived in Boston shortly behind Jeffrey and also settled in CT and a generation or two later his descendants dropped the second s from the end of their name, making it very difficult to keep the Jeffrey and Zachariah Ferris lines straight. Both families grew and followed the same general migration patterns from CT to NY, the Midwest and nationwide. Mrs. Phyllis Kitson (snail mail only), 711 Kensington Ave., Flint, MI 48503, is a recognized expert on the Zachariah Ferriss line. Hope she is able to help you. Rick, Just checked your other message. Who is Mrs. Kitson and how do I get in touch with her. I'm nesw to the internet and I need all the help I can get. Claudetta
Aloha Sandy, Thanks for the tip. Have been in contact with Mrs. Kitson on and off over the years. She is convinced my family is descended from the Jeffrey Ferris line, while she specializes in the Zachariah Ferriss line.
