Hi Pete My Gillespie line has a couple of Farris links. One is in Texas, my great grandfather married a Farris from Bastrop, Tx, and another is from my line that settled in Illinois. One thing I'm curious about is the Miller name. I have a number of Gillespie ancestors that have the middle name of Miller, mostly in TN. Yet, I've not been successful in finding an actual Gillespie/Miller marriage. I'd appreciate it if you know of any Gillespie/Miller links. Hi Wanda, Several of the Farris's lived in Savanna, Oklahoma and McAlester, Oklahoma. Most of the older Farris's have died off in this area, but a lot of their descendants are still here. Savanna & McAlester, Ok. are located about 60 miles to the North of Atoka, OK. Helen Farris The book "Oklahoma Place Names" states "FARRIS. In southeastern Atoka County, 18 miles southeast of Atoka. A post office established May 17, 1902, it was named for John L. Farris, first postmaster." Barbara Farris Cunningham Wanda Rabb wrote: >That is interesting, Pete. That is interesting, Pete. I guess either all of the Farrises left that area or else the male lines died out. Does anyone know anything about the history of Farris, OK? Sounds pretty neat trip still though. Sounds like a "town" I lived in, except I don't think there was even a cemetery. The town was about 3 block wide 1 or 2 long, Had a school (closed), 2 bars (1 attached to a small restaurant...actually that was just a "big room") a grocery store, Post Office, several "fireman" & about 8-9 cops that lived around the town. Illegal to burn trash (which I found out after I did it). It was a mining town. So, for any "excitement" the teenagers had to go to the nearby town about 20 miles away. Hi Wanda; I just returned homw from a trip to Dallas, Texas. On my way back I noticed that Farris , Oklahoma was only 17 miles East of Atoka, Oklahoma on Hwy 69 & 75 right where I going thru, so I decided to take a detour and go To Farris, Oklahoma. After arriving there I passed the Farris School Where I stopped and took a few pictures, then drove on into Farris, where I dicovered a Farris Church of Christ, 2 pump gas Station (closed) a Farris Baptist Church and also an Assembly of God. There was old house they called a Cafe that was also Closed. I ran into a gentleman putting air in his truck tire and I asked him if there was a Farris Cemetary and said yes and had me follow him and he'd point it out, there was about a hundred people burried there, but no Farris'. So my Trip to the Town Farris , Oklahoma proved that the School was closed the Gas Station and the Cafe were closed everyone else was in church and the rest didn't hang around tobe burried in the Cemetary. Atleast I finally Visited Farris Oklahoma. I just wanted to share my visit to you all. Take Care Pete Farris

Wanda, Do you know much about Edgar Boyd Farris, Sr? Thanks, Gaye Frady
I have been subscribed for a while and have monitored this site. Our family named Farris were all from South Alabama. My maternal grandfather was Orbie Farris. His sibling's names were Willie, Orbie, Lillie, Mattie Pearl, Annie Ruth, Clyde May, Cecil, and Gilbert. All were born and raised in and around Elba Alabama. They were all descendants of William Newton Farris and Addie Archer (Farris). If any of these are familiar with these people I would appreciate any leads on their history. Lynn
Cophine Smead Farris was married in 1947 to John Lester FARRIS, son of Frank FARRIS and Amanda Edith SWEENEY HERRING. John spent 32 years in the Marine Corps. Barbara

Mrs. Lynch, of Fayette, died Sunday, Feb. 16, 2003, at Colonial Manor in Glasgow. She was 74. Mrs. Lynch also enjoyed collecting clear glassware and kerosene lamps, said her husband, Robert Lynch. After a brain hemorrhage left her partially paralyzed in 1978, Mrs. Lynch had to relearn how to use the left side of her body. Her husband said that despite enormous difficulties, such as being unable to see from the left side of her eyes, Mrs. Lynch eventually regained her normal mental functions and always kept a positive attitude. Mrs. Lynch was born June 29, 1928, to Forrest Farris and Augusta Heaberlin Farris in Coulterville, Ill. She graduated from Collinsville High School in 1946 and briefly studied art at Southern Illinois University at Carbondale. After leaving SIU, Mrs. Lynch worked for several St. Louis banks. She married Robert Lynch on Nov. 23, 1950, in Fayette. Her son, Donald Lynch, said his mother was very supportive of her children's school activities. Mrs. Lynch was a leading member of the Higbee PTA and once taught sewing to 4-H groups. After her sons went to college, Mrs. Lynch joined her husband at his consulting firm, Lynch Engineering, where she worked as a secretary. They both retired in 1997. Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church in Howard County, where Mrs. Lynch was a member. Services, conducted by the Rev. Jodie Jackson, will take place at the church at 11 a.m. Burial will follow at Mt. Pleasant Christian Church Cemetery. Mrs. Lynch is survived by her husband; two sons, Donald Lynch of Columbia and Gary Lynch of Hales Corners, Wis.; a sister, Nellie Swartwood of Fulton; four grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. A brother, Robert Farris, died earlier.
