Jim, The Scottish Rite Easter Egg hunt is scheduled Saturday, April 12. Breakfast at 9, egg hunt at 10:30. Let me know if you and the kids are interested. Dr. Hardin did an EMR (?) on Mom's right arm this morning. He found some carpel tunnel--mild to moderate treatable. He will give her a steroid shot in that wrist in a couple of weeks that should give her some relief. He did not mention finding any signs of Parkinson's. I think Mom is coming around a bit on Visiting Nurse and an aide even though she naturally doesn't like the idea. She wouldn't sign a health power of attorney or living will when I had one drafted by Hellstrom years ago. She dug in her heels when Pat Nelson mentioned one. But as all these papers are signed soon (I hope) we'll see.... Dad.

H.L. This is what I have on William Farris (c1714-1777) of Washington Co. VA. While I obtained some of the following from various researchers, I have added some speculation, concerning William Farris's POSSIBLE ties to the Lunenburg Co.VA Farris family, which descended from Henry Farris, and earlier, Ian Esom Farris, immigrant from Edingburgh, Scotland. I welcome other researcher's comments concerning William Farris, of Washington County. From Randall Farris, W. B. Stratton, Sandra McIntire, and Mark Edward Farris research WILLIAM THE ELDER Not much is known of William Farris. He has been said to have been a son of Henry Farris. William was born near Richmond, Virginia about 1714. It is possible that he lived for a time in Petersburg since his father ran a tavern in Petersburg, Virginia. WILLIAM JOINS FARRIS FAMILY IN MOVE TO LUNENBURG COUNTY, VIRGINIA William's father and most of his family had moved south into Lunenburg County some time before 1750. On May 5, 1761 Henry Farris and his brother, Peter Farris, sold land in Lunenburg County, Virginia to David Farris. Henry Farris's daughter, Judith Farris Smith, and at least five of his sons, William Farris, Joseph Farris, Thomas Farris, Jacob Farris, and James Esom Farris, moved into the Lunenburg County (or the part of Lunenburg County that became Halifax County, Virginia in 1752) as reflected in the following Lunenburg County, Halifax County, or Pittsylvania County records: 1746 August, William Farris sued by John Pleasant, in debt. Luke Smith security for Wm., OB 3, p. 71 Brunswick County, VA 1747 April 20 William Farris sued by John Clement (Cleavant) in debt upon a penal bill recover vs def with Luke Smith, security OB 3 p. 170 Brunswick County, VA.. November 8, 1748 Along with James Hunt and George Abney, witnessed will of William Mays; signed "William (W) Faris" indicating that he use a "mark". Recorded October 1, 1751, WB 1, p. 39, Lunenburg County, Virginia March 24, 1750 from James Ferriss of Lunenburg to John Hersey, for 30 pounds, about 127 acres on the north side of Stanton River and bounded by Thomas Baughn's (Baughon) land which he bought from James Ferris, Andrew Cunningham, Mathew Maze, James Franklin. Signed: James (I his mark) Fearis. Wit: John East, William (W his mark) Farris, Joseph Farris. Recorded July 3, 1750, Susanah, wife of James, relinquishes dower. DB 2 p. 76, Lunenburg County, Virginia. March 24, 1750 from James Ferris of Lunenburg to Thomas Baughon on Lunenburg, for 30 pounds, about 127 acres, on north side of Stanton River, bounded by Matthew Maze, James Franklin, Andrew Cunningham. Signed: James (I his mark) Ferris. Wit: John East, William (M his mark) Farris, Joseph Farris. Recorded July 3, 1750. Susannah, wife of James, relinquishes dower. DB 2, p. 81, Lunenburg County, Virginia. 15 Jul 1772 Halifax Co. VA, DB 8, p. 410: Thomas Faris wit a deed of John East of Pittsylvania Co. to John Farris of Halifax Co., 100 acres on Brush Cr. Other wit: James Faris & James (I his mark) Farris Sr. EXISTING CHURCH RECORDS FOR WILLIAM FARRIS These records of tithes pertained to William the Elder. Based on these records it appears that William the elder remained in Lunenburg County, Virginia area. 1748 One Tithe, Lunenburg, Co. VA 1749 Tithed, Lunenburg Co. VA 1750 One Tithe, Lunenburg Co. VA 1782 Tithed, 9 whites, Lunenburg Co. VA (This could have been William Jr.'s tithe) CONFUSION REGARDING WILLIAM'S YEAR OF DEATH From Sandra McIntire and Randall Farris research, with comments by Elvin Farris William's death has been reported to be about 1754 in Augusta County, Virginia. This date and location may be an error. There is no mention of William Farris in Lunenburg County after 1750, except for the record of William's Tithe in Lunenburg. Was this William Sr. or William Jr., or a different William Farris? There is no record of his move to Augusta County. FARRIS FAMILIES MOVE INTO WASHINGTON COUNTY, VIRGINIA There seems to be eight Farris men who came into Washington County, Virginia in the early days. Without proof, there is speculation that these eight brothers MAY have been the sons of THIS William Farris, who seems to have been born about the time that Henry left the tavern business in Petersburg, VA. There was a Farris girl who left Augusta Co. VA for Lunenburg Co. VA, the "home" county of some of Henry's boys. Pure speculation, but could tie the Farris' in Augusta Co., Washington Co. and the Lunenburg, Halifax, Henry Counties together. From Fred Crabtree research (updated October 2002) The eight Farrises mentioned above are said to have been: Thomas, Champion, Isaac, Elisha, William, Robert, Gideon, and Edward. There are documents that suggest Champion and Elisha were related. Also William MAY have been the father or brother to Robert and Gideon. These Farris men, and their families may have been related, or by coincidence they settled in Washington County area about the same time. WHICH WILLIAM FARRIS LIVED IN EASTERN PART OF WASHINGTON COUNTY (PRESENT DAY SMYTH COUNTY) IN 1770'S? 1.) William Farris, father of Edward Farris who is said to have moved from Rockbridge County, Virginia to Washington County about 1772, died about 1754 in Augusta County. So he was not one of those to have lived in Washington County, Virginia. William's son, Edward Farris, was born about 1745 in Augusta County, Virginia. Edward was only a child when his father, William, died. He was placed under a guardian, Francis McCown, who lived in part of Augusta County, now known as Rockbridge County, Virginia. Edward is said to have moved down to Washington County about 1772 and settled in Abingdon, on the Middle Fork of the Holston River. 2.) William Farris, father of Gideon and probable father of Robert Farris: William Farris is said to have married Deborah. He died in 1777 and Gideon administered his estate. A Deborah, who died in 1812 at the age of 77 was buried at Green Springs Cemetery, south of Abingdon, Virginia. Her marker says, "Faries, Deborah, wife of Wm. Faries, d. 22 Mar 1812, age 77y, 9m, 12d It is speculated that in addition to Gideon, Robert was another son of William. These sons of William moved into Washington County, Virginia between 1768 (Gideon) and 1772 (Robert). Both Gideon and Robert had property on the South Fork of the Holston River, near Damascus, Virginia. 3.) William Farris, son of Henry Farris, possible father of Gideon and Robert: SPECULATION: William may have married twice. His first marriage was to Priscilla Woodward. If he were the William mentioned on Deborah's grave (see above) that would have been his second marriage. He does not appear in the Lunenburg County, Virginia records after 1750, except for one entry, which is probably his son, William Farris, Jr. If he was not the William Farris who died in 1754 in Augusta County, William is likely to have moved west and settled in Washington County. Since his only likely child is the William Farris (Jr.?) mentioned with the 1782 tithe in Lunenburg Co. Va. the other children could have been Gideon and Robert. It should be noted that other Farris kin settled in the west end of Washington County in what is now known as Russell and Scott Counties, Viriginia. Elisha Farris, William's nephew, had settled in Gate City, on Big Moccasin Creek, with his sons, Elisha Jr., Edward, Thomas, Mary, Nancy, Sally. It is thought that Champion Farris was another possible son, due to close relationships with the family. WASHINGTON COUNTY COURT RECORDS FOR ESTATE OF WILLAM FERRIS/FARIES/FARRIS January 28, 1777, the newly-formed Washington County Court held its first meeting at Black's Fort in Abingdon. The next day Secretary Arthur Campbell recorded: "On motion of Gidion Ferris Administration is granted him on the estate of William Ferris deceased giving Security whereupon he together with James Thompson and James Piper his Securities entered into and acknowledged their Bond in the Sum of One Hundred Pounds for the faithful Administration of the said Decedants Estate with condition as the law Directs. Ordered that Alexander McNutt, James Berry, William Lowry, John McCutchan, and David Carson, or any three of them being first sworn appraise the Estate of William Ferris deceased and make report to next court." KNOWN SON The only son agreed to by most researchers is William, Jr. He lived in LunenburgCounty and died in Pittsylvania County, Virginia. OTHER CLAIMED SONS? Of the eight Farris men that came into Washington County between 1763-1783 it is thought that in addition to William Jr., there were also sons, Robert and Gideon, who settled on South Fork of Holston River near town of Damascus, Virginia. Another son mentioned above may have been Edward Farris. He will be named, Edward, the elder, in order to differentiate him from another Edward, the younger. This Edward settled on Middle Fork of Holston River in 1774. The homeplace was said to have been located just north of Chilhowie, Virginia. An Edward Farris is mentioned several times in the records of James Esom Farris, brother of William. He could have been Edward, the elder, living with his cousin, James, in Kentucky in his later years. Note: Other researchers record a second younger Edward Farris, a possible son of Elisha Farris and grandson of James Esom Farris. This grandson could have been the Edward living with James in Kentucky. One of these two Edwards was the executor of Elisha's estate after he was killed in an Indian attack near Gate City, VA. in 1791. It is not known which Edward was residing with William's brother, James, in Lincoln County, Kentucky during the 1790's. One source indicates that the elder Edward died in 1793. If so, the younger Edward would be the one residing in Lincoln County, Kentucky. OBSERVATIONS (MORE SPECULATION) It is not presently known the exact relationships of these Farris's that moved into Washington County in the mid 1700's. Is William Farris, husband of Deborah, the son of Henry Farris? Existing documents indicate William lived in Lunenburg County, Virginia. Her cemetery marker has been located but her husband's has not been found. By the 1810 Washington County, Virginia census there were four William Farrises living in Washington County, Virginia. UPDATED REMARKS CONCERNING WILLIAM AND POSSIBLE SON, EDWARD (Dec. 2002) Reference Larry Cockerham and Elvin Farris correspondence 1) It appears to me that there were two Edwards. The elder is of your "eastern Washington Co." family and my family's Edward, the younger, is a probable son of Elisha, killed at Gate City in 1791. Unless a kinship can be established I maintain the younger Edward was Elisha's administrator and is the one shown in Lincoln County, Kentucky and later Giles County, Tennessee (maybe other places too). 2) William Farris (Sr.) was in Lunenburg County, Va between 1748 to 1750, where his name is recorded as witness to a will in 1748 and later in land sales of his brother, James Esom Farris, north of Staunton River (and near Cub Creek) in 1750 in Lunenburg County. This land is located in present-day Charlotte County, Virginia. 3) A William Farris was dead and in 1754 his young son, Edward was living with his guardian, Francis McCown. He lived in the part of Augusta County, that is presently Rockbridge County. There have been various theories concerning this Edward and his descendants. If the researcher (Mark Edward Farris) is correct there is a tie between the Edward of Augusta/Rockbridge County and the Edward, of Abingdon, Virginia and the Middle Fork of the Holston River, who signed to the petition calling the Rev. Charles Cummings as pastor of the Untied congregation of Ebbing and Sinking Springs., near Abingdon, Virginia. An Edward Farris appears in Botetourt County records in1771, the Fincastle County record (concerning the "call" of a minister in 1772, and later in Washington County records from 1779 to 1793. If he is not correct in the connection between Augusta County and Washington County William of Lunenburg County could fit, since this William was still living after 1754. 4) William Farris, Sr. of Lunenburg County MAY have moved west into the Washington County area with his family. Is he the William, who died in 1777 in Washington County, Virginia and left possible sons- Gideon, Robert and possibly another son? The 1810 Washington County, Va. census listed four William Farrises (Gideon, Robert, and Edward had sons named William). 5) Deborah was wife of William who died in 1777. She died and was buried in Green Springs Cemetery, Washington County. Her birth date would be June 10, 1734, since her marker reads: "Faries, Deborah, wife of Wm. Faries, d. 22 Mar. 1812, age 77y 9m 12d." Deborah and William were PROBABLY married ca 1754. Therefore oldest child would have been born in mid 1750's. 6) In his 32 page research paper W. B. Stratton lists possible sons of William and Deborah: Gideon, Robert; and Edward. Gideon was the administrator of his father's estate in 1777 in Washington County, Va. He is the only one directly connected. The other two have been listed, due to their Presbyterian church affiliation, their Scottish or Scotch-Irish ancestry, the sizeable number of their descendants to remain in Washington or Smyth Counties (from 1810-1850). The general proximity of their locations, time of first documentation suggests, but does not prove that Robert, Edward and Gideon were related (and likely sons of William). 7) It has already been mentioned that your Edward's father died in 1754. If Edward did come from Augusta County, he would not have been related to Gideon, Robert and their father, William. 8) Right now I think that Edward Farris, is not related to the other "east enders of Washington Co." Also he is not related to William Farris of Lunenburg County, Va. I think William's death year is wrong, or pertains to a different William. It seems that Randall Farris and Sandra McIntire both felt this way as they listed a minimum of information on him. How they got that death date is beyond me. As I get deeper into these research papers I will get back with you on any significant changes.
