Farris Manchester -- Dr. Robert H. Farris, PhD, Lt. Col. USAF Ret., died at a Manchester hospital on Sept. 23, 2003. He was born Aug. 17, 1931, in Eastport, Maine, the son of Arthur M. Farris and Mary Mitchell Henry. He went to local schools and graduated from Shead High School in 1947. He attended Bates College before joining the U.S. Air Force. After his initial tour of duty, he returned to Maine and worked with Inland Fishery. Returning to the Air Force, he graduated from OCS with a commission and served 27 years, including two tours in Vietnam. He continued his education receiving his B.A., M.P.S., and in 1974 earned his doctor of philosophy from the University of Notre Dame. After he retired from the Air Force, he worked for the Maine Department of Transportation. On March 21, 2001, he married his childhood sweetheart, Marilyn (Mim) Brooks. He was predeceased by two sons, Robert Melville and James Alan Farris. Besides his wife, the family includes two sisters, Hazel Schoonover of Chico, Calif., and Helen Hadley of Odessa, Texas; several nieces, nephews and cousins. Services: A memorial service will be held Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Washington Street Baptist Church, Eastport, Maine. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Baptist Youth Camp, in care Ralph Hicks, 87 Clark St., Eastport, ME 04631.
