James arrived in New York in 1845 from Liverpool. Apparently, many Irish left from there. He then made his way to the Danish West Indies where in 1846 he was registered as an unmarried overseer a Estate Work & Rest on St. Croix. He soon left the D. W. I. for Farmington where he married Eliza Lawrence 8 May 1848. The Lawrences too were from Belturbet. Except for a few references to living in Hartford and serving in the Civil War, he lived in Farmington for the rest of his life (1906). He typically described himself as a gardener throughout all this time. The only certain connections with Miss Porters are (1) he lived across the street and (2) he named a daughter born in 1857 Sarah Porter. I wrote to the school years ago asking if they had any record of him. Some very nice person there spent a lot of time looking i! nto the archives of both the school and a farm associated with the school but did not find him. She noted too that the records are spotty. There also are indications that James was very much involved in the political life of Farmington which makes me think that if he actually did work for Miss Porters he would have shown up on some of their records. But then again, he was a gardener living across the street and the school certainly would have had a need for someone like him. I don't use the message boards much - and missed your message. I'm the person looking for any info regarding my g-grandparents Patrick Farrelly and Bridget McKenna. My grandfather worked as Miss Porter's gardener (or one of her gardeners) from 1874 - 1878. I know this from family stories, letters, etc. He and Bridget moved to Columbus NE to homestead in 1878. Shortly after they moved west, two of their children died. We don't know what happened to Bridget, but she disappears from the records and family history after the girls died. The story is that Miss Porter offered to adopt Patrick's surviving girls, Mary and Lizzie. When did James begin working for Miss Porter? I know Belturbet - I try to get to Ireland each year, and stay with friends who live along the Cavan/Meath border. M g-grandparents were married in Moynalty, Co. Meath. I hope to hear form you. I have a copy of a letter affirming that Hannora M. FArley died in Meadville, PA July 2, 1900, which was signed by Patrick Farley's father in law John Geary. Then I found a newspaper article describing the incident where Hannorah aka Anna aka hannah was killed by a train in Vallonia. In that article it names Patrick Farley of Vallonia as her brother and John D. Murray of Corry, PA as her half brother. Looking at the US census information I see that James and Bridget L. Murray are the parents of John and in the 1870 census Mary Farley is listed in the house. The obit of James says he was born in Peterborough. The ages of Hannah and Mary Farley jive with the 1851 Canadian census information. All of this needs proof. At the moment I am trying to find the burial spot for James and Bridget and hopefully an obituary. Also the burial register for ST. Brigids Catholic church in Meadville shows Patrick N. F! arley died 1902 of typhoid fever age 49 born near Peterborough Canada. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Cavan Ireland. In the 1850s Brooklyn, she married Owen COYLE. Mary and Owen lived on Navy St. in Brooklyn for most of their married life. Mary died Oct. 20, 1884 and is buried in Holy Cross. I am trying to find Mary's parentage and siblings. When her husband died, he did not leave a will and there were problems with the probate. Some of the people involved were Patrick FARLEY and Lucy Farrell of Brooklyn. I believe they are related to her. Also, she and her family were all buried by Peter Farrell. Lucy Farrell was the executrix of Peter Farrell's estate. Also, on the 1860 US Census, there is a Joseph FARLEY age 24 with wife Mary and son Patrick 1 living next to Mary and Owen. Possibly a brother? If anyone can shed some light on this family, please do. Thanks. Robin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
