My great grandfather was called John Farrelly, born around 1857. When he discharged from the army at age 18 he lived in Cavan in Ireland. My grandfather Charles Farrelly, (later changed to Farley when he went to Scotland, around 1910). He married Margaret Jane Gallagher from Strabane, Co.Tyrone in Strabane Church on the 24th April 1916. My Father was Patrick Farley, born in Addiewell, Scotland around 1920. I would really appreciate any information on my grandparents and great grandparents and news from anyone who is connected to my family. Regards, Charles Farley

He had a pub in Kells. He was a member of the Irish Brigade that went to Italy around 1860 to fight for the Pope against Garibaldi who was attempting to unite the Papal States. Willie was an active Fennian and died around 1873. His tombstone relates the above information and it is in Castlekiernan cemetery. The pub continued to exist in the family of his wife. This information was given to me by his grandniece who is living in Dublin. Other relatives are living in Meath.

This took place in the 1880's where Mr. Sweetman, who was quite wealthy, bought land along a RR line in MN. The catholic bishop assisted in bringing the Irish to the Prarie of MN where they wouldn't be exposed to alcohol and could farm. Barb

John married Marion Toysbin. I havent found where they landed in Australia. They are not listed on the Melb passenger lists. Marion's father Samuel landed in 1887 in Melbourne with her brother Frederick on the ship Oroya. I have an idea - yet to be proved - that John's father Owen Farrelly (who married Annie Shipp) landed in Adelaide and travelled overland to Geelong where John was born. John did have a brother Felix.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/5dV.2ACEB/6.8 Message Board Post: Jean, I'm pretty sure that should be Miss Porter's School for Girls, and it was (is) in Farmington, CT just outside Hartford. I learned this through researching my own family from County Cavan. They left Belturbet sometime before 1850 and settled first in Farmington. Other County Cavan families in Farmington were the Gallaghers and the Lawrences. I'm sure there were others too. Whatever the reason, tiny Farmington was a destination for families leaving County Cavan. My family was known in Farmington by the names Sothergill/Suthergill/Southergill. James Sothergill, probably the first to arrive, remained in Farmington until his death in 1906. At various times, he described himself as a gardener and his house was right across the street from Miss Porter's. I've tried to establish whether he worked there as a gardener, but the school has no record of it. He clearly knew Sarah Porter, the founder of the school, because he named one of his daughters Sarah Porter Sothergill. I wouldn't be surprised if part of the attraction of Farmington for those contemplating leaving County Cavan were the gardening and laboring jobs at Miss Porter's and at estates in the area. I'm curious how you know that Patrick Farley worked as a gardener at Miss Porter's. Daniel Smothergill
