Hi to Sharon and Kevin I too have Farrellys from County Cavan. They were from Cormaddyduff, Castlerahan. Below is an excerpt of what I have established: "Castlerahan is one of the 16 parishes with surviving census returns for the year 1821. There are 68 households recorded in Cormaddyduff townland in these returns. Eleven of the households were named Farrelly. Only one of these Farrelly households has a son named James listed. This James was unmarried at the time of the census but was old enough to be a father in the 1830s and 1840s. It is probable then that this is our ancestor, James Farrelly. Also living in the household, were James' parents and his five siblings. James and Margaret were married sometime before 1839. No record of their marriage has been located, possibly because of the gaps that exist in Irish records, or because they may have married in a parish other than where they lived, perhaps the parish Margaret was from. Their known children are Michael, born 1839, Patrick, born 1841, James born 1843 and John whose records place his birth between 1843 and 1846. (For example, his marriage certificate in 1869 stated he was 23 when married, and was therefore born in 1846. His death certificate shows he was 86 when he died in 1929, making him born in 1843). Catholic Church records for the parish of Castlerahan exist for the period 1829-1840. There are two baptismal entries for the children of James and Margaret Farrelly in this period. One is for Michael, in 1839." Best wishes Jill Livingstone Sydney, Australia
Hi Kevin & Barbara, I also have Farrelly's in my family. John Farrelly b.c.1806 & his wife Ann (nee Brady) b.c.1807. No proof but family gossip says from Cavan. Their children, Michael b.c.1834, Thomas b.c.1836, John b.c.1838, Patrick b c. 1842, Bridget Mary b.c.1848, Peter b.c1849, Edward Francis b. c1851. Haven't found how they came to Aust. but settled in Sth Aust., where Michael was married in 1856 (1st recording of them in SA). There may also be a West.Aust. connection through Ann (nee Brady). She is thought to be related to Fr.John Brady who was the 1st Bishop of Perth. No proof of this either. There are Farrelly's in WA with a possible connection, may be cousins. Fr.John Brady is reported to be from Cortober, Castletara, Cavan so Ann may also have originated from there. Is this anywhere near Drumlane? They bought land here in SA and some are still farmers here. Intersted if you think there is a connection - Sharon ----- Original Message ----- From: <farrelly1@bigpond.com> To: <FARRELLY-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, March 06, 2006 2:32 PM Subject: Re: Patrick Farrelly & Annie Egan Co Cavan > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: Farrelly > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/5dV.2ACEB/67.1.1 > > Message Board Post: > > Barbara, > I don't know if there is a connection. My gg grandfather, Bryan Farrelly was born circa 1807/08 in County Cavan, Ireland, married Bridget Cook born circa 1817 in Ireland (County Meath?). The marriage date was around 1834 when the first son was born. Two more children were born before 1843 when Bryan was sentenced to be transported to Tasmania for burning down a house. Bryan ended up living in the midlands region of Tasmania and in about 1854/55 he was able to pay to bring his wife and 3 children out from Ireland. After she arrived, they had 4 more children. My brickwall starts here & would appreciate any help with either Bryan or Bridget. Thanks,

Might he be your great-grandfather's brother? > Do you know Michael's father's name? My great great grandmother, Mary Farrelly McGarvey, was born and raised on a farm in the townland of Taghart North in the civil parish of Kingscourt in County Cavan. She married Patrick McGarvey who was raised on a farm a couple miles away in Lisdrumturk townland of the civil parish of Carrickmacross in County Monaghan. I was in Ireland this past summer looking up the Farrellys in the Valuation Office records. The Valuation Office in Dublin has records that were kept current after the Griffith's Valuation. The records of Taghart North (also known as Clasnabradden) townland in 1860 show my ancestor's farms. They also show several farms leased by individual(s) with the name of Peter Farrelly. Do you know if your ancestor came from the townland of Taghart North? I have copies of the records showing the farms of all with the surname of Farrelly in Taghart North. I have not yet scanned them, but when I do, I would be willing to share them with you or anyone. Dennis Hughes
