Counties of Morgan, Monroe and Brown, Indiana. Historical and Biographical. Charles Blanchard, Editor. Chicago: F. A. Battey & Co., Publishers, 1884. Fayette County. JEFFERSON FARR (deceased), was born December 25, 1812, at Lexington, Ky., and was one of the family of James and Catherine (Kurry) Farr, respectively of English and Irish descent. James Farr was a soldier in the war of 1812, and came to and settled in Ray township in in 1824. Jefferson Farr married, February 26, 1834, Sarah Miller, to which union were bestowed twelve children, eight of whom are living - Julia, James, Thomas, Jane, Martha, Joseph, Angeline and William H. In 1841, Mr. Farr moved to this township, where he met his death December 29, 1883. He was the owner of about 300 acres, well improved and provided with a good residence. During life, he gave to each of his children about $1,500. He was an industrious and prudent man, by the exercise of which virtues he accumulated his property. He was a leading Republican of this township, and served several terms as Township Trustee. http://www.starbase21.com/kybiog/fayette/farr.j.txt
The tradition of family values connected to this property dates back to 1797 when Samuel Farr acquired the land as payment for his service in the Continental Army. His grandson, Richard Ratcliffe Farr III, a Confederate soldier, built a home for his mother after the war. This home, know as Grandma's Cottage, is still standing on this historic site. The Fairfax County Courthouse was built on grounds donated by the Farr-Rattcliffe family in the late 18th century. One of his children, Wilson Mahone Farr, built a spectacular Georgian estate surrounded by exquisite boxwood and rose gardens for his wife Edith. They named it Ballynahown after his mother's ancestral home in Ireland. This exquisite example of traditional architecture is being gloriously revived for the enjoyment of Farrcroft residents. Over the years, the Farr family donated much of their land to the City of Fairfax, providing a home for the Fairfax County Courthouse and the Patriot Center. The 70 acres that remain provide the perfect setting for your home. http://www.basheerandedgemoore.com/content_comm_farrcroft.html <A HREF="http://www.basheerandedgemoore.com/content_comm_farrcroft.html"> Basheer & Edgemore</A>

------------------------------------------------------------------------------ -- Sydney Farr He is Dead to the Hills He Loved He is dead to the hills he loved. They cannot call him back to life again. But I remember him when the fields are turned for planting. When I hear silver winds of summer, see woodsmoke in the fall of the year, and wild geese honk south for winter. And I remember him when there is rain on Pine Mountain. When foxfire lights up dead logs at night, when his bees work in the red clover and wind whispers in the corn. I remember . . . the day after the night he died-- frost-white fodder in the shock, sumac leaves red enough to bleed, yellow dirt where we dug his grave. He is dead to all he loved. We cannot call him back to life again. http://athena.english.vt.edu/~appalach/readings/byermann.htm#farr
