FARR, THENA MAE (1927-1985). Thena Mae Farr, champion cowgirl, rodeo producer, and cofounder of the Women's Professional Rodeo Association,qv daughter of Tom and Lula Farr, was born on December 16, 1927, in Baylor County, Texas, where she lived all of her life. Both her parents were Baylor County natives, and they raised three children on their ranch near Seymour. A typical ranch youngster, Thena Mae learned to ride at a very young age and became a noted equestrienne as well as outstanding all-around athlete. At Seymour High School, where she graduated in 1944, she was class secretary and basketball captain in 1942-43. But her equestrian skills and outgoing personality earned her greater honors in the community. In her four terms as "Miss Seymour" she represented the town at rodeos and horse shows throughout the Southwest. She earned many honors in amateur "sponsor contests," combination beauty and equestrian contests that during the early 1940s were the only rodeo events open to women. She attended Texas State College for Women in 1944-45 before returning home to become a full-time rancher. However, her interest in rodeo remained strong, and she dreamed of the chance to compete in real, rough, stock and roping contests like the cowboys. She and her close friend Nancy Binford of Wildorado, Texas, often discussed their frustration at being shut out of rodeo competition. In September 1947 they solved the problem by producing an all-girl rodeo at the Tri-State Fair in Amarillo. Their successful venture broke all fair attendance records and motivated the participants to form the Girl's Rodeo Association (now the Women's Professional Rodeo Association) the following year. Farr served on the original board of directors of the GRA and followed Binford in the presidency in 1951. In addition, the two incorporated their production company as the Tri-State All Girl Rodeo and for the next five years produced all-girl rodeos in Texas, Colorado, and Mississippi, thus providing women opportunities they had long lacked. Farr also continued competing, winning saddles, trailers, and prize money in cutting, bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, and flag racing. By the time she and Nancy Binford decided to dissolve their company in 1953, all-girl rodeos were well established in many states, and the GRA had become accepted as the sole governing body for women's contests in American rodeo. The two, confident that they had achieved their goals, left the business having broken even but never having shown a profit. Farr then turned her attention to ranching and community activities. She served as an adult leader for the 4-H Club and belonged to the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association, West Texas Chamber of Commerce,qv American Cattle Raisers Association, Seymour Remuda Club, Seymour Chamber of Commerce, Baylor County Farm Bureau, and American Quarter Horse Association. She was a lifelong Democrat and active in the Seymour First United Methodist Church, to which she donated several items in memory of her parents. For her many contributions to women's rodeo through her all-girl rodeos and charter membership in the GRA, Thena Mae Farr was inducted into the National Cowgirl Hall of Fameqv in June 1985. She died after a short illness in October of that year and was buried at Westover Cemetery, near Seymour. Professional rodeo is today a lucrative full-time career for women. FARR, LOUIS LEE, SR. (1865-1930). Louis Farr, county surveyor, rancher, banker, and businessman, the third of six children of James and Laurena Finney (Stevens) Farr, was born in Greenville, Texas, on August 19, 1865. He attended schools in Greenville and then went to Add-Ran College (now Texas Christian University). In 1884 he moved to San Angelo, where he surveyed for C. D. Foote. The San Angelo Standard subsequently employed him as a typesetter, after which he worked in the county clerk's office and for Frank Lerch's land firm. When Edgar P. Sawyer came to Texas to seek land for his family's firm Farr helped him secure acreage to start the Bar S Ranch, which eventually grew to 269 sections. In 1889 Farr became San Angelo's first city engineer. He was twice elected county tax assessor but declined to run a third time. In 1905 he and others purchased the buildings and surrounding land at Fort Concho and started a corporation called Fort Concho Realty Company. That year Farr helped raise $50,000 for the Kansas City, Mexico and Orient Railway to bring its main line through San Angelo. In 1906 he was elected mayor. In 1907 he was vice president of the Park Land and Cattle Company, the townsite company that developed the Mertzon area. The cornerstone of the new First Christian Church building names him chairman of the finance committee. He became chairman of the church board. Farr served as director and vice president of the Wool Grower's Central Exchange Storage Company, which he had helped organize in 1909. He was secretary-treasurer of Eldorado Townsite Company and a partner in Broome, Farr, and Lee Real Estate and Insurance. He managed the Sawyer Cattle Company's Bar S Ranch in Irion and Reagan counties and became a director and secretary in the firm. With the 1919 Central National-Western National Bank merger, Farr was named Central National Bank vice president; he became board chairman in 1927. On October 29, 1926, one of the largest oil strikes in the nation was made at the Yates oilfield.qv Ira Yates chose Farr as his business manager and attorney. The two had been business partners and friends since 1885. Farr was a member of the Masonic Lodge, the Rotary Club, and the San Angelo Country Club. He enjoyed spectator sports and card-playing and almost never missed the Southwestern Exposition and Fat Stock Show in Fort Worth. He married Ellen Osmer (Nellie) Johnson on March 7, 1887. They had three sons and a daughter. Nellie died on February 17, 1907, and Farr married Mattie C. Pistole on August 23, 1907. He was working at the warehouse of Wool Grower's when he became ill. His doctor and friend Ira Yates took him to a Temple hospital, where he died on June 10, 1930. He was buried in Fairmount Cemetery, San Angelo. Many memorials honored Farr, including the donation of land and construction of a building near Mertzon for the Boy Scouts called Camp Louis Farr. Hi Debbie! I believe there was some Thomas Farrs on the coast of SC, that were planters on St. James or St. Johns Island. I found some stuff on them in Charleston at the archives there. I have done a good bit of research on the Farrs in SC, and know about Col. William Farr descendants. Eugene Farr has a lot on them, have you met him? My Farrs, I finally found in the Lexington area, were the descendants of John George Fahr, who was a German Immigrant, that received a land grant in the Dutch Fork area. My Farrs, migrated on to Shelby Co., AL in the early 1830-40's, and then my branch on into Monroe Co., MS. In MS, there are other Farrs that I cannot connect with, and there are also lots of Farrars and variations. Hope this helps some.
