It contains the only record of her birth. Town records were destroyed by fire. If the bible still exists, the names appearing would be parents Frank(lin) PIERCE and and 2nd wife Mary (aka Mae) Lauretta McDERMOTT with daughter Dorothy Mae Pierce b. March 24, 1888 in Isle of Wight, Virginia. There is a strong possibility that the original location would have been in MA, CT or VA, depending upon the point in time it was donated. If it was the Pierce bible, sons by Frank(lin)'s unknown first wife might appear.... Franklin, Arthur and Cleveland; if the McDermott bible, parents of Mary, Patrick McDermott and Ann(i)e GORMLEY (of New Haven, CN) might be seen. In the Sunday edition of the Hampton Roads Section (B1) of the Virginian Pilot, there is a really neat story about a couple who purchased an antique bible (1882) at an estate auction and are now thinking it would be nice to go back to the 'family' who originally owned the bible. The bible was orginally purchased by Fay Gordan's father in Delta, PA for $50. It included the noncanonical books of the Apocrypha and has 2,000 illustrations, many in color. Previous owners had inserted ferns, memorial cards, etc. including one for Lydia Wantz, 1809-1889, whom was the "original family matriarch". Her daughter Sevannah Wantz Stough, gave the bible to her son, Harry Isaiah Stough on CHristmas 1885. Sevannah died in 1926 and was the last family entry in the Bible. Julian and Fay Gordan of Newport News, VA are seeking the 'closest' family member descendant of this family (STOUGH) to relinquish the bible to in order to get it back into the original owner's family. If anyone can claim the closest relationship, they may be able to receive this beautiful, leather covered bible. I have no phone number or address or e-mail for the couple other than what was in the newspaper article. GOOD LUCK!

The following advertisement appeared in this week's issue of the Mid-Virginia Trading Post (Richmond). I have no connection with the seller or the paper, but am posting it to a wider audience because its a tragedy for such things to leave their families! "Holy Bible, 1884, V/lg. family ed., ornate leather covering. "Shields" family, must see to appreciate, EC, $125. 561-2804." The area code would be 804. The 561 exchange is based in Amelia County, VA (SW of Richmond).

The family record page of my Family Bible was included in a book called Family Bible Pages of Old Connecticut Families. The book appears to have been published in the 1930's, perhaps as part of a Depression-era project of some kind. Does anyone know anything more about this project. For one thing, what happened to the Bibles that were brought in? Is there any record of who submitted them? Thanks- Dan

My g-g-grandparents Isaac and Rosina STIFAL UPDIKE were married Nov 23, 1865. They were originally from Ohio and settled in the Ft Scott, Kansas area. Here's my contribution: COFFEY / BILYEU Bibles (also DICKENSON, WOOLSEY, DENNIS, BAKER, AWBURY, RHEA, DONALDSON PONDEXTER, SCOTT KEY LEWIS, JACKSON, DORRIS LINTHIAN, DAWDY, etc.) BIBLE #1 This small black bible was lent to me through my grand uncle Thomas BILYEU who in turn was lent to him from Janet WOOLSEY of Kalama, WA. Janet's mother was Maxine DICKENSON WOOLSEY, her mother was Verna COFFEY DICKENSON, and her mother was Eva BILYEU COFFEY daughter of William Henry BILYEU "Wid", who in turn was grandson to William BILYEU & Dianna COKER BILYEU who came to Oregon in 1852. I could not locate a date in this small old tattered black bible, but will list the first page info as well as all entries as best as I can. When not readable or questionable I will put a ? mark so you know that I could not be sure of the info. I capitalized surnames when I knew they were surnames. Most everything was very legible. There are at least 2 different handwritings in this Bible. When needed I put an * to show a break in the pages. If so that is wonderful but the message only went to me and not to the list. If I have correctly interpreted your meaning, please post the challenge to the list and let's see how much we can raise. BTW, I'll match your $25. Hi Family Biblers, Wow, I went on vacation and came back to a zillion messages from this list! I thought I was the only one out here! I have a couple questions (which I've asked before), and a idea... 1. Why is everyone subscribed to this list? Are you looking for Bible info, or do you have Bibles to post, or both? (Me, I copy family info from Bibles I find in antique shops and want a place to post it. And it woudn't be so bad if one of MY long lost Bibles showed up here, either!). 2. Who is the listowner? 3. Is the information posted to this list ever put into any type of database (other than the archives)? Okay, now for my idea. There have been lots of Bible records posted here... but I would venture to guess that not too many people would think of checking the archives of this list, since most people probably don't know this list exists. More people probably know about the GenWeb Archives and use its search feature. SO... my idea is, what if we all went to the archives of this list on occasion (when we have nothing better to do -- hee hee) and copy the info from some of the Bibles and submit it to the GenWeb Archives project? And anyone who does one could let us all know (so we won't submit the same Bible twice). Anyone game? I just think it'd be a shame if someone's Family Bible info was available but they didn't know where to find it. If the listowner doesn't think this is appropriate, please let me know.
