Hi everyone, As an old eBay user, I can give you a couple of search tips to help you find your family treasures. I hope someone finds them useful. 1. Don't use the search option from eBay's home page. Once at the home page, click on the search option across the top menu of their site. This takes you to a much more detailed search page. 2. Be sure to use the option of searching "title and descriptions". If you don't check this box the search engine will only search the item title which is normally not that descriptive. 3. If you want to search for general items don't use the "title and descriptions" unless it is a unique item such as "Zabriskie Bible". 4. Read the search tips section for help on how to use more advanced searches such as " Brooks +bible -Garth". (You get the idea!) 5. You can also use the "Listings" pages instead of searching. Click on "Listings" from any of the pages you are on. eBay has cluttered up this section a little with the "Hot Items" so you have to wait until the page loads and then find the section that gives you all the categories. You can go straight to the category you may be wanting to browse such as Antiques:Books and Manuscripts or Collectibles:Militaria. But be careful. The items are listed by the seller in whatever category the think it best fits. I have found family items under Railroadiana and other weird categories that I wouldn't have normally checked. 6. Bid with odd amounts. Don't bid $25 on something. Most people bid even amounts. Bid $27 instead. 7. When you find an item that you are really interested in, check the seller's other listings. They often have several items that we would think go together, but they are selling them off one by one. You may want all of them! Email the seller to find out if there is anything else related that they are willing to sell. Many of them will deal with you behind the scenes. Is this list ok to send copies of info to that are in old family bibles you have in your possession? I wanted to be sure before I sent my info in. Thanks Devorah My email is devorah@mail2.quiknet.com
The E-Bay posts have been a welcome addition to this list. In the past the list has been relatively inactive. Isn't that what we subscribed to this list for: the possibility of finding a family Bible? Well, at least with Barbara's posts, we are getting some to choose from. My 2 cents worth. Brenda
Here is a nice site where people list items they have found and will sell, such as bibles, old letters, old certificates, anything. Also there is a place on this site to register that you are looking for things of a specific surname. You can register for an automatic email to come to you when there are 10 or 20 additions to the page. http://www.pastconnect.com I think this info applies to our list! Good luck, Charla
I almost hate to bring this up on a list with the word Bible in it but did anyone notice the E-Mail address of Mr Stanley Harris BULL426@worldnet.att.net I would say that the first four letters were appropriate. Keep up the good work Barbara! Snuffy
I would also like to thank Barbara for taking the time to glean the information from ebay and pass it on to us. I've been to ebay and I can never seem to find anything of value, but found two things of interest from Barbara's postings today. Keep up the good work, I think it's very worthwhile! Thanks again Barb, Roni
Barbara, Thanks for continued posting of the information you find on e-bay. I have checked there several times and have not been able to find all the things you find. I appreciate your sharing with the list. My only regret is that I have yet to discover something related to any of my lines. Cate
The only problem I see with a web site we could go to is that these auction environments only last for 3 to 7 days. Then the auction is over. By having such a wonderful person as Barbara send the information to us, it helps to assure that it's current when we get it. Barbara, I've found two books thanks to your work that I'd love to have. Unfortunately the first one was actually two VERY large volumes and I figured the postage would break my feeble bank even without the auction price. The other one may still be on sale come payday -- there's still hope there!! -----Original Message----- From: Davidson [SMTP:davidson@oceana.net] Sent: Sunday, March 28, 1999 1:21 PM To: Family_Bibles-L@rootsweb.com Subject: ebay Hi again, Barbara and listmembers: Personally, I think it is a shame you feel you have to make a compromise. I would much prefer getting the information from email as many times I only connect to let my mail come in and then disconnect so I do not tie up our busy phone line. This option will not be very convenient for me but I still appreciate your great efforts. I have a suggestion but I don't know enough about computers and mail lists to know if it would be feasible or not. Why couldn't we form a list that dealt with items for sale or lost or found items on anything to do with family history? Then whenever someone goes to a site and finds something they could post it there. You could post your ebay items and others who surf could post info found at other auctions or sites. Those of us who are interested in finding these type of items (and for the life of me, I cannot understand who wouldn't be!!) could subscribe to the list. Perhaps this would not be possible for some reason (spam?) but I have often wondered why there couldn't be one site that us researchers couldn't go to to list or find these types of items. Just my opinion. Mary davidson@oceana.net

For the rest of the readers, I have this question, why should one person feel that his interests should be imposed on the rest of us? What is his authority to tell us what we should or should not be allowed to receive? Lastly, I have been told that _ spam_ was a term used to refer to direct mass mailings to individuals - basically junk mail. Perhaps either Mr. Harris is more of a novice than he would have us realize. (Or perhaps I am.) Judith Van Voorhis

Hi. Thank you for your kind words. I believe there is a list such as that. I just learned about it yesterday and haven't really checked it out. You might check: GEN-MARKET-D@rootsweb.com (To subscribe - GEN-MARKET-L-REQUEST@rootsweb.com GEN-MARKET-D-REQUEST@rootsweb.com The Bible list is usually so small, that I wouldn't mind posting it here. It's just the other long list that seems to give problems *smile* Barbara Davidson wrote: > Hi again, Barbara and listmembers: > Personally, I think it is a shame you feel you have to make a compromise. I think Mary had a wonderful idea about starting a list. If not at rootsweb, we could do it at Onelist, I for one love having this type of information presented in Email form. I saw three books on the list just now that I have a great interest in. Thank you Barbara. Becky

I was not quite prepared for this yet. However, because of the interest (and controversy) over the posting of information from Ebays auction house, I have made one of my webpages into an information page. I will have the same information on it that I've been posting to the list. You will be able to click on the link and it will take you to the appropriate page in Ebay. For those of you who really can't access the Internet, please let me know and I'll see what I can do to help you. (Don't ask computer questions please. I'm not very competant in that at all!! *smile*) The main page of my website will have links to various interesting sites I've found in my wandering around the web. It is incomplete. I have a lot more I plan to add. the web site for it is: http://www.angelfire.com/ok2/sites/ The website for the Ebay links is: http://www.angelfire.com/ok2/sites/ebay.html I hope this will be a good compromise. Any feedback, please let me know at sayona@telepath.com I will be continually adding to this page. Oh - will someone please let me now what color my links are? *grin* Barbara
