I am getting more email about what should go on Family Bibles than all my email put together. Let's just put bibles and leave all this back and forth stuff off period. Thanks.

I have had several responses to my posting about the ENGLISH Famiy Bible so it appears there is some interest in the data. As noted in the earlier posting the Bible has suffered severe fire and water damage. Both covers are missing. The title page, along with the first 76 pages, is missing. There is no identified family record section in the Bible, just blank pages in several sections whereon family records have been recorded. The Bible has supposedly been in the ENGLISH family since 1704 (although I did discover a date of 1702 in the records). If the first owner of the Bible recorded any family data, those pages must have been among the missing first 76. A page at the back of the Bible provides this information: "Imprinted at London by the Deputies of Christopher Barker, Printer to the Queenes most excellent Maiestie 1599. Gum privilegia." A tag fastened in the Bible with a length of twine has written on it "Bible 1599. One of the first Bibles printed. 'Buried' in England when ordered burned." The Bible is presently in the hands of an English descendant in San Diego, Calif. He was generous enough to allow me to copy the family information by hand - no photocopies as it is much too fragile. I too am an English descendant. This family came to America and to my knowledge were in Burlington Co. NJ, Tompkins Co. NY and Potter Co. PA. It is unfortunate that they did not see fit to give their location when entries were made in the Bible. It is also unfortunate that they did not record the marriages, other than Joel and Abigail (who were both Englishes, and did not give the maiden names of any of the women. 1st set of pages about one quarter into the Bible. Hi Listers, I'm new to this list, and have not received any general instructions as to what can and cannot be submitted to this list. Please, if there are any instructions on how to post a listing, and what not to submit, please give the list the information for all to use. I'm sure I'm not the only one that needs this cleared up. It will be a very good website when all know how to use it understands it uses. We can make it a great list if we all work together achieving the same goals. Alaine in California
My apologies if I misinterpreted the purpose of this list and misused it by posting a query for a lost Family Bible. I thought that it was for anything that has to do with a Family Bible... either lost or found. The Bible was sold, just a few years ago, when the court took over the affairs of a second cousin, now in a rest home. Her home, and everything in it, were indiscriminately sold even though a friend now states that she asked to be able to keep and item or two for her.

I never chastised a particular person, just pointed out that information being submitted was in query form that should be submitted to a query list for that surname or county in which events took place. I joined this list for Family Bible information that I had to share or discover. I have unsubscribed to this list. And I was not rude, I simply stated "Subject: Re: Please Family Bible info only!", because this is not a query board, a board that was to deal with Family Bibles, and information, but folks, do what you want with this list. -----Original Message----- From: Pat Short <pashort@rectec.net> To: Family_Bibles-L@rootsweb.com <Family_Bibles-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, August 20, 1999 8:44 AM Subject: Re: Please Family Bible info only! >I am new to this list also and I agree ,you are not very kind to the new >comers. you could be a bit kinder to everyone. I think it was about two months or more that I never received a posting on this list, now it seems to be quite busy. Although I kept the Bible I was able to contact a family who were descendants of the people in a Bible that I have. It has been in my family for at least about 50 years but was in good enough shape that I was able to get them a photocopy of the page that had family information on it. I found these people through this list. It was also my impression that this is for listing Bibles that you have in your possession but I am a little surprised at the hostility shown to one who used it for other purposes. We all make mistakes. Actually the idea is to post all information about and in the bible so that everyone interested has a chance to benefit from the information contained in the bible. This is not a marketplace for bibles, but a site to list the contents of family bibles. The descriptive paragraph below comes directly from the Rootsweb Mailing List site. Anyone wishing to sell a bible, or return a bible to descendants of the past bible owner could always add a note regarding their terms. >>> FAMILY_BIBLES-L -- A mailing list for the entry ONLY of information on any and all family bibles. Postings regarding a family bible should include, if known, present owner and address (needed as proof to make the bible valid); person submitting the information and address; date purchased, place, and price; plus locations of family discussed in the bible, if known, and all vital information given in the bible. <<< Randy Floyd
Hello, I just found at an antique store in Ellicott City, Maryland the Funeral/Memory Book for Mollie Adelia Brennan. It lists her birth as November 8, 1863 and death as June 30, 1942. She was born in Portsmouth, Virginia and died in Baltimore City, Maryland. Her parents were Edward and Sallie Bradford. She is buried at Loudon Park, Baltimore City, Maryland. If this is anyones family, please let me know...I would be glad to give them the book. Thank you, Denise email denisekay711@yahoo.com __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? The Family Bibles list was to get the information out about the Bibles someone already has, not what they are looking for. I am looking for Bibles at yard sales, auctions, used book sales, anywhere someone may have one they don't want. Please post the information you have in your Bible(s). When you need a Bible, check the archives to see if someone has listed that information. Quite frankly, if I were to find a Bible today, I don't remember any of the names that have been listed and I won't take the time to try to find out if the one I have is on this list. I would post the information and then let the readers see if it was something they wanted. If you are looking for a Bible list it on the surname, state or county list. BTW you may have a Family Bible that you don't want to get rid of but the information in it might help someone else. Would you please list the names, dates, locations, etc. from them? Please post only what is in the Bible and contact the person direct to get more information about it. One question for the list. HOW do you find the archives for the Family Bible List?? Would someone please post that URL? Linda __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Bid and sell for free at http://auctions.yahoo.com

How do you find the archives for the Family Bible List? Could someone please post that URL? thank You,
I think they only give the family surname and if the name is one of your family's surnames, you will contact them personally and give other names, and perhaps dates, of family members you feel would be in the bible. They will verify that information and if it is a match, they will make the necessary arrangements to get the bible to you. Otherwise anyone including bible collectors could say that it was their family bible and have quite a collection of old bibles. The idea is to return the bible to the actual family. Just a thought.
