    3. I'm sorry - I missed the whole point of this list. It's to post Bibles we have in our possession that may belong to someone out there, right? Not my information to look for one, right? Got it! Carol in Okla

    3. My Grandfather's sister is in possession of the Canady/Bishop Bible (Emanuel Co, Georgia). I beleive it survived the Civil War and it is in very bad shape. However, because of the war and some unmarked graves, etc, it is the only written record of my ggrandparents parents and families. It is the only record that we have of my gggrandparents birthdates. They have been checked against the census records as fairly accurate (and list a few children that were born and died in between censuses). I admit that oftentimes they were not totally accurate, but sometimes one has to take what they can get. As soon as I can find my original transcript, (done in 1983) I will post it to the list. 3. I am new to this list and am interested in this. I don't have a problem with someone querying to see if someone out there has a family Bible they need, or posting the info in an extant Bible in their possession (the more info the merrier, I say) but I do have a problem with a general genealogical query. I subscribe to many lists and if one wants to do a general inquiry, there are other posts for that. Enough said. Don't want to have any more bickering. I have in my possession a family Bible from a family that lived at 109 East Evers, Bowling Green, Ohio. I also have various announcements, letters, and a couple of photos. However, we still have not unpacked from our move and they are in a box somewhere in here. I would be more than happy to return these to the family once I can find them. We lived in that house about 28 years ago and my mother found them in the attic. Packrat she is, she carted them around until 1996, when she ran across them (after 15 moves, two divorces, and a couple of floods) and gave them to me, as I was very attached to the house before we moved. The only thing she kept was a traveling trunk, and I think that these things were in it. We probably sold the trunk years ago. At anyrate, I will attempt to find it and post the info to the web in hopes that someone will need it. Jeannine R. 3. I have been a subscriber, although fairly quiet, for the past year. This is the most activity I have seen. It is time to go forward. If you are looking for a Bible, then give that information. If you have one, then give that information. Be adults and quit bickering. Thanks in advance, Peggy Hornick Iowa pegpowel@netins.net

    1. Re: ENGLISH Family Bible, Part 1 of 2
    2. In a message dated 99-08-20 13:02:55 EDT, eileen@tir.com writes: << The Bible has supposedly been in the ENGLISH family since 1704 (although I did discover a date of 1702 in the records). >> Maybe everyone already knows this, but I thought I'd pass it along just in case someone doesn't and may find it useful. A Bible may contain a date in a family record that is much earlier than the publication date of the Bible. In fact, sometimes the births/deaths/marriages of ancestors of the original owner are recorded, which makes it a real find. In my family there is at least one family Bible that had several items of incorrect family information entered, long after the dates of the events themselves. Only after finding other records, created during the lives of the people involved, was I able to discover that I had been barking up the wrong tree by depending on the Bible record to be accurate. 1. All this Complaining
    2. Charles & Marilyn Tibbits
    3. I am new on this list and thought I would enjoy it but all I have seen is complaining because some have put in names that they are looking for. Who knows, someone else out their might have a bible with those names in them. This is still for genealogy anyway or is it. Sounds to me like it is a grip list. Lets all get back to the purpose of these lists which I think is find our ancestors and help others to find their ancestors too. Now that I have said my piece I am going to get back to the business of this list. How about the rest of you and hope no one else gets off this or other lists. I have a bible that is German [written in German] It was supposed to have been destroyed during the WWll but wasn't. It has the name C. M. FEIGANSPAN and ALTENHEIN on the inside cover. 3. This sounds like the sensible thing to do. Also I forgot on my prior message that I am quite a few lists, some with the name of the list in the subject. On this list I have to bring up the reply to all screen sometimes to see what list it is. I personally would like to see an abbreviation such as FB in the subject so I know what list it is from. 2. Linda Stewart
    3. This is the information straight from the Rootsweb page. A mailing list for the entry ONLY of information on any and all family bibles. Postings regarding a family bible should include, if known, present owner and address (needed as proof to make the bible valid); person submitting the information and address; date purchased, place, and price; plus locations of family discussed in the bible, if known, and all vital information given in the bible. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? 1. How to unsubscribe
    2. W. Butler Stringfield
    3. "Every mailing list really has two addresses: the list name, where posts should be sent, and the list name followed by -request, where commands to the listserver software should be sent. For example, posts to ROOTS-L should go to ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com while "subscribe" and "unsubscribe" requests should go to ROOTS-L-request@rootsweb.com." In the case of this group the proper address to "unsubscribe" is Family_Bibles-L-request@rootsweb.com (Family_Bibles-D-request@rootsweb.com if you are receiving the digest mode). So if you want to unsubscribe use the right address and you'll get results. You can also go to Rootsweb (http://www.rootsweb.com/~maillist/) where you can find the above quote, more info and not even have to enter the address yourself to send subscribe/unsubscribe messages. By the way, only the command itself (unsubscribe) should be in the body of the message with no sig or other stuff. W. Butler Stringfield Columbia, MO wstringf@mail.coin.missouri.edu

    1. How to contact the listowner
    2. I have cut and pasted this from the rootsweb help page. May I suggest that complaints be sent to the listowner per the directions listed below instead of sending offensive messages such as the one that Neal Caskey at ostrich@bellsouth.net sent to the mail list where all subscribers, including those of us who were trying to stay out of the petty bickering, have to read it. ********* HOW DO I CONTACT A LISTOWNER? To contact a listowner of any RootsWeb list, send an email to: LISTNAME-request@rootsweb.com And put RE: Listowner in the subject line. This tells the computer to forward it to the listowner. Substitute the list's full name in for LISTNAME. For example roots-l would be: ROOTS-L-request@rootsweb.com ************* Basically this means to send an email to: Family_Bibles-L-request@rootsweb.com (or for those on digest Family_Bibles-D-request@rootsweb.com) and in the SUBJECT line (not the body of the message) write: RE: Listowner then in the body of the email write your message to the listowner. Hope this helps, Barbara (who is NOT the listowner so please do not send complaints to me)

    1. QUESTION
    2. Becky Pacey
    3. Hi Everybody, I hava a question, I have been on the list lurking a long time, and just had a thought, is it permissible to copy and paste some of the messages sent to this list re: Bibles and re-post them to another list where I think that there might be someone who is interested in it. How do I do this. What is the rule on it. Thanks, Becky

    1. Purpose of this list
    2. Barbara
    3. I have been on this list for about a year. This is the first time I"ve seen someone object to people asking about the whereabouts of family bibles. My assumption about the purpose of the list was: 1. A place to list the contents of family bibles you have 2. A place to "query" whether anyone might have run across or own a family bible you are looking for. 3. A place to let people know where there are family bibles listed, either contents or for sale. I never thought it was such a hidebound list, that one or two people, not listowners, could dictate policy. Considering the fact that this list lies dormant for months at a time, I really can't see why anyone would object to a few e-mails occasionally. I'll unsubscribe also. Any family information I have is already in the Archives.
