Some have commented on the fact that you can't preserve formatting with tabs. For census, I just put mine in a narrative format, "John was listed on page 52 in Jefferson Twp, and is shown as age 40. He was shown as born in Indiana. He owned real estate worth $250. Also in the hshld....." I like this because it seems more user-friendly than a bunch of tabulations. Also, the chatty style lends itself to comments, such as gross differences between other years, neighbors, and so on.
