ALWAYS, ALWAYS put a "guest" gedcom file in its own database until you check it out. It could be corrupted and render your whole database unusable. Click on file, new database, name it and get it set up following the directions on the screen. Then click gedcom, then import, and let the file import to the new database. Once in its own database, you can make sure that the information is something you want, change place and source formats, etc. Then if you want to import some of the material to your database, make a gedcom from it of what you want, avoiding duplicating names if at all possible, and import that new gedcom to your own database. You want to avoid merging unless absolutely necessary. NEVER do any importing without having several backups in case something goes wrong.
