    1. [FO] Family Scrapbooks
    2. Family Origins has a lot of good features, but I think that picture handling is not one of its best. You can add a family picture fromthe role of icons at the top of the screen, where you see the camera. There is a choice there for individual or family pictures. It appears to me that the only use for this would be to have a picture on the family group sheets. This prints at the top of the page and the information begins after that. You can also print a family album. I have thought it would be a wonderful idea if we had a book choice called something like "family album book." In this selection, the family picture would print at the beginning of each family story. maybe if you had this option checked, the family picture would be printed just before the head of household information is given. I bet that is what everybody does, anyway. Just put it in by hand. Oh, yes, I see that another part of the questions are referred to have to handle a picture of several people. Because the program only uses the family picture in the family group sheets, and the individual pictures in family group sheets, pedigree charts and book of reports, I tried to putting a picture of the multiple people being in the directory and then and then linking each person shown in the picture to that biome. The problem is that when you use the picture in reports you get it printed multiple times. So one of the things I have done is use my photo-handling software to crop out each individual and then save separately. That way you get just the individual in reports. This is a bit of work. If I have a picture that shows the parents and all the siblings, I generally link that as a family picture as mentioned above, and also use the individual pictures with each family member. I should mention the doubt until just recently I didn't have a printer that did a satisfactory job of printing pictures for reports, I have a good printer now and use pictures more often.

    3. Started a new family book in FO 10, planning to use a Journal with multiple reports and scrapbooks for the first time. Suggestions for making the best possible use of the Journal feature (new in FO 10) are most welcome. Single indented descendant report with pictures for 7 generations might be suitable, or perhaps a family group sheet (like a chapter) for each of the children of the main couple would be better followed by one indented report and scrapbook for each child. Book might be displayed as a sample at the computer genealogy conference in October along with family picture book samples from other genealogy programs. One member of the computer group uses FO 8 but I haven't seen printouts. Last season the computer genealogy group had three meetings out of ten with the subjects of family books, scanning and editing pictures. One of the children is my greatgrandmother and there a separate scrapbook file with 750 pictures for her household. Branch file started from a GEDCOM import has simple data entry with few cited sources or computerized sentences joining facts. An outline with notes and pictures comes closest to an illustrated version of the original typed notes of 1970 without the need to add pictures each time a new RTF report is created. Parts of 1901 online Canadian census images can be included to show family groups. A mix of color pictures and text is okay for home printing but can be expensive if a copy service charges the color rate for all pages to print a PDF or word processor file. Same-name relatives will need a nickname or some method of identification in the FO 10 Journal book index. Even if a researcher plans a carefully edited family book for publication, a direct printout is valuable for the draft stage of a project because the wording of notes is easier to correct in the database. -- Elizabeth ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> > Family Origins has a lot of good features, but I think that picture handling > is not one of its best.
