Folks, I've searched, but cannot find an answer to this one. I want to create a Surname List like the one that is created when a website is created. That is, each surname listed once, the list in paragraph form. I would like to put this out on my website as an easy reference. Is there any way to easily create this list, or do I have to do it the hard way?? Thanks in advance for your help. Mike [email protected]

Create a website of everyone in your database, Preview in the browser, Open the Surname list, highlight all the names and press the [Ctrl] - [c] key combination to copy it to the clipboard. Open NOTEPAD (WordPad or Word won't work, they also show the links.) Press the [Ctrl] - [v] key combination to Vaste it in there, from there you can copy to Word or a better word processor to change the format or something. (Now, you can go back and delete the folder with your Web Site in it.) Alfred D. I use Excel to do this, and I can extract an alphabetical list of over 3000 surnames from my FO database in about 10 minutes. Here's the steps I use. If you don't have Excel, there may be other probrams you can use that will also work. First, create a custom report within FO based on one field, Surname. Direct that report to a text file. Import that text file into Excel. In Excel, make that list of names, which includes multiple instances of every surname you have in your data file, the first column. In the second column, in the second cell, insert this formula: =IF(A2=A1,"",A2) Replicate this formula for the length of your list of names. What this does is fill each cell in column B with either a null, or a name, depending on if it is the first occurance of that name or not. Then copy all the cells in column B and paste to column C using Paste Special, and choose Values. Then sort on column C Then delete all rows above where the names start in column C. Your list is then in column C. It's pretty easy to convert this from a list to a bunch of names in paragraph form using MS Word.... Just import the list into Word and do a search and replace on the paragraph symbol, replacing ^p with a comma & a space. -- Charlie Hoffpauir http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~charlieh/
