Hi Goldie, I cannot answer your question about the digest unless you are simply not subscribing and unsubscribing in the correct manner, but I have some comments on filtering out attachments. First, if you have a working, up-to-date virus program you DO NOT need to worry about attachments. Of course if some email looks weird and it is some subject you know nothing about, you might as well delete the email without opening the attachment. I have been on the net about 6 years, receive over 100 emails a day, have never filtered out anything, and my Norton antivirus has found EVERY potentially bad email. If you want more protection than an un-to-date antivirus program, type Zone Alarm in a search, and find the url to download the free version of the program. Zone Alarm is a software program called a firewall. I used Zone Alarm in combination with my antivirus program before I upgraded to a cable modem (now have a different type of firewall built into my router), and found it a good program to have. Zone Alarm had a feature to scan email for known virus file extensions and rename them before any harm can come to someone's computer. If you were expecting attachments and believed them to be safe, you could rename them and open them. And, if any you opened turned out to have a virus, your virus program would intercept the virus. A firewall program also has technology that keeps someone from breaking into your computer and using it as a server to send viruses out to others, potentially without your knowledge. Your filter won't help this situation at all. Attachments are an excellent way of sharing genealogy materials. Several times a week I send research guidelines, family group sheets, pedigree charts, small computer generated books, or other FO generated documents as attachments. I would hate to think that many or most of the people I share information with, are filtering out attachments. To me it makes no sense, not to use attachments when they are such a useful feature of email and greatly enhances the ability to share genealogy material. Whether you want to be on digest or list mode, is obviously your decision. But I do urge you to rethink your "attachment policy" as you are likely missing material that might be very useful. Have you tried sending an email request to [email protected], putting subscribe as the only word in the body of the message and on the subject line? If you are doing this, and it does not work, the list administrator may be able to unsubscribe and subscribe you to the List (L) mode. To unsubscribe from the digest, use the same procedure substituting D for L and using the word unsubscribe. All rootsweb lists work the same way. This is a very useful list, and I think you will find it helpful once you get subscribed in the manner you choose (list vs. digest mode). Margaret Scheffler
