    1. [FO] FOWIN32 error message
    2. Hello again, I'm still having problems with Family Origins. Now on *both* computers! I still haven't been able to figure out how to access the database on the desktop after upgrading FO9.02 to FO10 so I decided this morning to install the original Family Origins 9 on the laptop and put the "fowin9data" in it so that I can at least *find* people. It loaded without a problem. The patch (FO9.02) gave me the error message "FOWIN32 has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL. FOWIN32 will now close." I took the floppy containing the patch out of the a: drive and insterted the "fo9data" cd I had burned on the new burner and inserted it in the d: drive. I did the copy and paste thing but got the same "KERNEL32.DLL" message. Can anyone help me get back to square one with either fo9.02/10 on the desktop (running Win98) or FO9 on the laptop (running WinME)? I am so frustrated with this situation that I am on the verge of tossing the entire eletcronic mess in the trash and going back to pen and paper! Then, when using the upload feature of myfamily.com, include this GED file as an upload. Make sure the website .html coding includes a way to link to the uploaded GEDCOM for others to download it.

    3. Your first message did not say anything about two computers. This time you did mention the version numbers; 9.0/9.02 and 10.0. But I am wondering which one you installed first. Without a detailed description of what you have done, I do not know where to begin. My advice: DUMP 9.0X and go with 10 everywhere. If you checked, and you only have one copy of "FOWin32.EXE" on your computer, and if you do have a CD that says Family Origins 10, my advice would be to install version 10 from the CD, over top of the original program, whatever version. BUT, you have to be sure to install it in the same folder as the original or it will not overwrite it and you will have two versions in residence on the same computer. If you do have two versions installed on one computer, then use the Windows Control panel, add remove software to remove them, (do not delete the folder and it's contents or you are likely to delete your database) Then reinstall version 10 in the same folder your previous working copy was installed. What is it that you have on that CD? A copy of the 35 files in your database? A Family Origins backup? A GEDCOM? Each of these is accessed differently, and each of these should be compatible with Family Origins Version 10. Alfred D. 3. As I recall with versions 8 and 9 you had to install the patch from the hard drive and not from a floppy. That may be the source of your error there. I would download the patch fresh from http://formalsoft.com/files.htm and store it on your hard drive, running it from there. I still recommend that on your desktop computer you delete entirely both versions 9 and 10, checking to make sure all the files have been deleted -- If you have other versions, make sure they are in completely different directories. Do not just uninstall through Windows -- check to make sure all files from the various versions are actually deleted. Before uninstalling check to make sure what directory the files are actually in. Once both programs and all their files are deleted, reboot the computer. If it has not been defragged recently, you might want to do that as well. Disable your virus program and close all other open programs. Then install version 10 from scratch. This has been an extremely stable version, with few people having trouble with an installation. Once installed you should be able to open your version 9 database in version 10. If your backup is on a cd, you will need to change the read only attribute.
