There is nothing to fear, Donalee, so long as you have known good backups. Known good means that you have restored the backup to a new, empty database and verified that the data is OK. I generally uninstall the old version before installing the new one but I don't think it makes any difference. Whichever you do, it WILL NOT affect your database in any way.
