    3. My usual pattern with any program I am upgrading is to purchase as soon as available and then read the relevant mail list or bulletin board for a month or so before installing. In my case, I do the data entry on several databases and websites, and I am trying to avoid downtime by watching for any problems that might affect me from other users' experiences. I do keep backups (and gedcoms in the case of genealogy programs) and I also try to upgrade on a weekend when I've had plenty of sleep and a couple quiet hours set aside just in case there are any problems to work out.
