    3. It should not be necessary for us to have to resort to some contrived system of symbols to mark linear ancestry. I am using up arrows for my paternal lineage and asterisks for maternal PLUS a pound sign to indicate multiple lines. What happens, however, if I want one of my sons to be the root person (or send my database to him. Now, the markings are meaningless since my maternal ancestry is now part of his paternal ancestry.
